What happened to Dixons?

I'm trying to phone a Dixons store and it keeps telling me the number is not recognised. On the website I can't find a list of highstreet stores.

Do they only sell online now?

Yes they only sell online and if you order something currys deliver it as its the same group.

They're only online now Im affraid. However, they do pass on great savings because of this. I saved close to £100.00 over comet on my tv.

The delivery service was utter crap for me. Could not find my house, so I had to walk to find them. They couldnt follow simple directions over the phone. They didnt even carry the tv to my house. I had to walk a good 5-600 feet with the tv by myself. Not easy.

Anybody live near canterbury who would accept to have a large object delivered to them that I could come and pick up in a van from France?

Dixons Group own Currys and PC World (along with some other retail brands).

A few years ago they decided to sell off a lot of their small in-town stores (mostly Dixons) and concentrate on their large out of town outlets.

So now Dixons as a retail brand only exists on-line, and then it is only really Curry's with a different front end on it.

Such is the anti-competitive nature of our electrical retail market now.

Are you sure that a UK TV will work in France? My UK TV doesn't work in Belgium (admittedly an old non LCD type).

The change in name came about because customers going into stores expected Dixons online prices instore, so they changed the names to differentiate the online operation (now Dixons) from high street stores (now all under the "Currys" brand).

A lot of the high street Dixons stores re-branded to Currys.Digital, so they still exist (kind of).

I believe that the Dixons name was retained for their duty free stores.

All the Dixons stores I knew of still exist, and are exactly the same apart from they are now called Currys.Digital

A simple PAL TV from the UK won't work for picking up French signals.

Of course in Northern France you can pick up UK signals, or you could wire up Sky to the TV (just don't tell Sky you're doing it).

We have a PAL TV in our French house, wired up to UK satellite. We had a French guest who was aghast that they couldn't get French TV on it

Otherwise I shall just have to buy a French TNT (Freeview) set top box and plug that in.

Dixons stores still exist, but only in airports.

All the high street ones are now Currys.Digital as said above.

Most UK spec stuff has the SECAM innards but no external conectivity. My SONY VCR had the SECAM terminals on the edge of the boards, but no Coax terminal soldered onto it.

I ended up buying an AIWA in France - ALL French goods appear to have PAL as well as SECAM.

Tryout your Freeview idea first - you don't want a plasma that only shows Black and White films!!

Television System: PAL/SECAM B/G/D/K, PAL I/II, SECAM L/L’

Wouldn't you say that this should be OK?
