007 or oo7?

Well, which is it?

Phonetically us English say double "oh" seven. But is Bonds identity zero zero seven like a serial number or is it oo7 like if it was short for Operation Operative 7.

Please settle a lunch time argument.

It's a number. It's just because the Brits say phone numbers like Oh-7-9-7-9...

I've always taken it as letters O & O (double O) and the number 7 because Bond has had his "double O" status revoked a few times.

Double O status would refer to something rather than just a preffix number to his code number.

The Americans sometimes say "Oh" for Zero as well, as in Boeing's 7 Oh 7 nomenclature for their first jet airliner.

I'm sure I read in one of the books that there are only ever something like 10 (or more obviously, 9) active 00 agents at any time so there wouldn't be a 999 but there would be a 009.

They would come together though but not be the same thing. Being an overseas operative would mean he is an assigned agent of MI6 and therefore would naturally have a licence to kill. He's had both revoked in different films though

I always assumed it was a numerical thing.

And yes, one of the other 00's is mentioned in Moonraker (the book anyway), when he comes out of Peenemunde and is recuperating.

I loved that book, it's way better than the film, and I wish they make a true-to-novel version with DC. Could be a cracker.

But MI6 must have loads of agents who aren't allowed to run around offing people, surely? I always assumed that achieving '00' status was like an upgrade to Sky+ on your regular Sky package or something...

Also, agreed on the Moonraker shout. Top novel. The 'gambling' scene in Blades at the beginning is one of my favourites...
