By accident a £20 note has been torn in half. Does this mean im 20 notes down and may as well throw it in the bin or can I tape it together?. Never had this happen before is it still valid currency even though its in 2 bits?.

Still legal tender. Go into a bank with both halves and they should give you a new one.

yes So long as you have both sets of serial numbers from the note you will be fine. I would suggest you don't bother with trying to tape it up though. I never have on the couple of times it has happened to me.

If they wont accept it there is a form you can send it off with and you can get it replaced. Millions are claimed back that way every year.

this happened to me not long ago in a multi story. Put a slightly torn 5ver in the machine and it duly ripped it in half and spat the other half back out. I turned around and said the que waiting to pay "anyone want to swap this 5ver for the cost of my ticket?" (£2.60) i got this repsonse whistle then i noticed the obligatory tramp next to the venders, he almost dropped his JD at the chance, did the deal and he scarpered. Result or did i get ripped by a vagrant?

You can take it to any bank and they will swap it as long as it has at least one of the serial numbers on – so you can take it in even if you have only 1 half.

If you quickly go to another bank with the other half ……… whistle

If each bank note has a serial, surely they would log that that particular serial has been refunded, meaning you could not try to get the other half refunded by another bank?

Or do I have too much faith in the system?

I've had less than half a bank note replaced. I can't remember if i took it to a bank or sent it off though.

I always thought it was as long as you had an obviously more than 50% of a note, which contained a full serial number, it could be swapped for a new note?
