can anyone recommend a good hotel in SFO? open budget, but would rather not go down the usual hilton / jw route

We stayed at The Pickwick Hotel last August. Excellent location close to Union Square, good italian restaurant on site. Rooms well furnished, clean and very comfortable. Parking underground as well.

Brilliant bakery/coffee shop opposite as well.

Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

The Clift is pretty funky to stay in . Small rooms but well appointed and a wild reception area.

(I was in SF last week. Tip of the day.: Go to Gary Danko for dinner. Best restaurant I have eaten in for a long time. Forget booking;its always booked, but they have a bar that has full menu and is not reserved. Go early and mid week and you will get a seat. $93 for a five course amazing meal.)

Was going to say The Clift. Been there a couple of times.
