So, me old mum wants to buy me something special for my impending 40th.

She really wants to buy me a posh leather / suede coat (think 3/4 length smart affair, rather than either sheepskin or biker jacket), and is looking to spend about £400.

Problem is, having played willing and tried a few on - they're really not me. I'm not in denial about my age (no, I'm not), but as soon as I put one on I feel about 20 years older and 20 times nearer thinking cravats really are quite stylish.

Any thoughts about what would be a helpful suggestion for Mum about how to spend her £400 on a classy item for me to cherish for years to come?

I think I'll take the opportunity to suggest the good old coke and hookers before anyone else steps in.

I'm dropping hints to my wife along the lines of precious gifts made in the year of my birth, like a Rolex Submariner, case of Port, E-type, Daytona etc etc

Perhaps I'll be more likely to receive some original vinyl like the Beatles Let It Be, Led Zep II, or an original poster from a film of the year - M*A*S*H, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Performance.

A nice watch.

If she is prepared to buy second-hand you could get an Omega for that.

Or if new, there a number of decent mid-range watches for around that figure. Go ask for recommendations in the PH Watch Forum.

You could ask her to buy you the Royal Bank of Scotland and she'll probably get change

Really? Not by much though, surely? I got one from my birthplace for my 40th smile

Anyone want to buy an unopened bottle of single malt, from Edinburgh, made in 1963 ? biggrin
