A:

Newton's second law of motion pertains to the behavior of objects for which all existing forces are not balanced. The second law states that the acceleration of an object is dependent upon two variables - the net force acting upon the object and the mass of the object. The acceleration of an object depends directly upon the net force acting upon the object, and inversely upon the mass of the object. As the force acting upon an object is increased, the acceleration of the object is increased. As the mass of an object is increased, the acceleration of the object is decreased.

On a similar question theme:

I was looking at a frozen waterfall on the side of a ski slope the other day - on the bleakest of days, fog, snow falling, flat light - why was the waterfall still looking bright blue?! No blue sky to reflect confused

1) The honeycomb in Cadbury's Crunchie bar comes off the production line in a long, wide sheet. It needs to be cut to size for each bar. How is it cut?

(slightly more interesting than it sounds as using traditional cutting methods would create huge amounts of mess and dust, and the method used most not damage or contaminate the honeycomb)

Answer: it is cut by very high pressure vegetable oil, a bit like a laser cutter cutting sheets of steel. It has no ill effect on the honeycomb and produces very little mess.

____

2) How do you escape from an overturned McLaren F1 when the gullwing doors wouldn't operate?

Answer: there is a ringpull connected to a kevlar string that runs through the glue line of the side windows. Pull the ring, the string cuts the glue and the window pops out.

These probably aren't what you're looking for, but hopefully will interest someone!

Newton actually stated his observations in terms of momentum, not the commonly simplified version used of F=ma.

His second law is: rate of change of momentum of a system is equal to the net force acting on the system. :P

Q: A plane is standing on a runway that can move (some sort of band conveyor). The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyor moves in the opposite direction. This conveyor has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyor to be exactly the same (but in the opposite direction). Can the plane take off?

A: Yes.

Actually a question on my final 'General physics' paper.

Is it a written question? A pub quiz style question? Does it have to still be difficult if they can look up facts? (i.e have the internet)
