This was a thread I started....am just waiting for my appointment with the consultant.

And I sympathise....just spent 7 hrs in agony this morning, to the point I had to take the day off work, and get the ex to take the wee lad to school.

It's a proper op so you will need to go in overnight and have a General Anaesthetic. However, it is done with keyhole surgery these days and they only need 3 or 4 incisions to do it, one of which is through your belly button (as it hides it).

The gall from your gall bladder breaks down fat, so without it you can be a little fat intolerant and may find you, er, how can I be delicate, need to choose a table near the loo if having a meal that could set you off. smile

I hope my wife won't be too upset if I say this, but she had hers out and because she used to suffer from constipation it has balanced her out nicely in that department. But your mileage may vary.

Edit: Oh, I'm sorry I missed your original thread Penny.

Had it done many years ago. I was told I was an unusual victim, as typical patient was "fair, fat and forty". At the time I was dark (hair), slim and healthy and 30-something. Then, it was major surgery, and I have fond memories of the Pethidine effects afterwards! The main thing is the result was no more pain or discomfort - it works!

Someone I worked with had it done and unfortunately it went a bit wrong, turned out she had more than 1 bile duct and bile was leaking into her abdo cavity.
Surgeons couldn't suture the 2nd duct because the tissues were too fragile.

So key hole turned into full open up job. She lost 2 stone (good thing) and recovered after about 3 months in hospital. She was really quite poorly. OK now though!

VERY rare for this to happen and at least you end up skinny!

My wife had terrible pains from this just last year frown

Elected to have the op, it was keyhole as mentioned and one night stop over, she struggled for a week or so but is much better now and pain free which is a great thing!

don't worry too much, it seemed pretty straight forward from the ded side at least!
