Couple of things that I've been meaning to ask for a little while, and I'm sure somebody on here will have an answer.

Whilst flying with Qantas to Oz a few years back we hit some very rough stuff over India, and for some reason the pilots voice came over the PA system, and I'm sure he said something like 'Maydeck', does this actually mean anything?

Also, why do cabin crew always sit on their hands during take off?

Not sure about the first bit, the second bit is just force of habit I think, not for any reason in particular.

Maydeck? No idea I'm afraid. You'd have hit some CAT or Clear Air Turbulence which made it all wobbly that's all.

Why do CC sit on their hands? No reason for it that I know other than the seat they are on are sometimes very narrow and uncomfortable.

Mrs said it was to stop flailing hands if the aircraft brakes sharply, so there you go.

Nice!
How serious does the situation have to be before the call of mayday is used?

Perhaps you heard "Main Deck"? (as of course the 747 has a main and upper deck)

A life threatening situation.

Official def is "grave and imminent threat requiring immediate assistance"

Oh, that's a good point. It was a while ago, so that could be what they said. It was in a 747 as well.

Pilot was saying Ah maydeck you if you're lucky...

But was a bit slow switching off the mike...

Being an Oz, he was addressing the nearest sheila sitting on her hands..

If you listen carefully, he said I may dick you if you're lucky...

Aussies, eh...? rolleyes
