Should Public Sector workers get pay rises?

Absolutely not, under no circumstances.
Ever? Seems a tad harsh, even for public sector workers! Some will deserve it, others won't. Leave it to management to decide what is reasonable, and sack them if they get it wrong.
But MP's, no. No way. The country is a mess, and we're in a recession - so there's no need for them to up their pay.
The public sector (correct me if i am wrong) is non-profit?
So funding for the public sector comes mostly from the private sector, where everyone is being laid off at the moment.
This Labour government have created a monster. They can't start making the public sector redundant as the unions will go to town on them, but we just can't afford it anymore.

surely we should in fact amend legislation so we can claw back all the final salary pensions....
Harriet, is that you
Better to remove some of the non-jobs and allow those doing reasonably necessary public sector jobs the chance to earn performance related increases - some might even call it a bonus - but nothing automatic.
The public sector strikers......sorry workers are always moaning about pay rises in line with inflation. Well since inflation is the lowest since 1960 perhaps their inflation-linked salaries should do the same. What works one way works the other.

Many of the public sector bodies have legally enforceable agreements with Govt. that they will get a certain rate rise (nflation or the average of rises of comparable sectors).
On the otherside I think decently paid public secior workers would be unwise to pillage the public purse at the moment give the pain elsewhere in the economy because when things turnaround it won't be easily forgotten if the pen pushing white collar worker carries on in his warm fuzzsy world coasting towards retirement without showing some solidarity with the rest of us.
Having said that, this Sunday's papers were full of hefty public sector jobs so at least one sector is doing well!

I know everyone like to have a go at them, but Public Sector workers are being made redundant all over the place - it's not the job for life it once was.
I don't really 'like' to have a go, it's simply an economic truth - we cannot afford or sustain the current levels of spending, escpeically as the private sector capitulates and tax revenues plummet. Emperor's New Clothes & all that - not a popular call perhaps, but someone at some point is going to be forced to making it, if not from within the Uk government, then parhaps the IMF.Digga said:

I'm a public sector worker and don't think we should get a pay rise, however, we got 2.5% last year and probably similar this year - most of this is union driven.
I also work for a private sector firm and haven't had a pay rise in that for three years.
Your public sector job can't be that busy if you have time for a 2nd job too.I also work for a private sector firm and haven't had a pay rise in that for three years.
Whereas we in the private sector are working 50-60 hour weeks and still getting pay freezes.

Most certainly notNot only is it morally wrong that private sector workers facing wage freezes should fund pay rises for public sector ones through their taxes. The bursting of the bubble has meant that the deficit (excluding the cost of the bank bailout) will get very large indeed. This will require either big tax hikes or spending cuts, or both.
