Beer.Wine.

Making like the nanny state is worried about health and alcohol, it's just a 'socially acceptable' way to raise tax in yet another stealthy way.

Soon anyone buying a 4 pack from Morrisons will get a filthy look as a binge drinking selfish twaart.

It's getting stupid.

All these stealth taxes on the grounds of health, safety etc. AFAIK duty on wine/beer etc is already at 8%, not including VAT at 'only' 15%. That makes it 23% or near as dammit nearly 1/4.

I hate this Government. It's so damn devious. (Well actually, it's not, its just that it tries to be).

I've heard that they might be bringing something into play whereby one father is only allowed a maximum of two children. May just be a myth though.

Alcohol.
It was always going to be that from the moment the "Voluntary" drink responsibly lables started appearing.
Just like on cig packets.
It will become compulsory.
Doctors will an agenda jump on the bandwagon.
Then the warnings will get bigger.
Then the tax will get stupid.
Then it will be something you won't be allowed to do in public anymore.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

If this is the Scottish thing you're talking about, then it's a load of bowlocks. The idea is that if you add an additional tax to booze, you'll stop the wrong kind of people buying it. However, in order to work, this plan must be applied to all sales of alcohol. So, in effect, the "normal" people who enjoy the odd pint/can/bottle of wine, will suffer from higher prices.

Nanny, nanny. nanny.

Its not actually. Its going to be a minimum price per unit of alcohol. The vast majority of alcohol will not be affected only cheap high strength alcohol which tends to only be drunk by the teenage neds and delinquents in bus stops / street corners etc.

Drinks such as buckfast, super strength lager and cider will be affected. Dinks in pubs or normal strength beers / wines etc from the shop should not.

Of course if you want to admit to drinking buckfast yourself then go ahead.

If they want to stop binge drinking and fighting, just dont let Chavs buy it.

A bit simplistic, but effective in the main I would say. smile

Perhaps not just one but I can see a future where two children would be the maximum in this country. Would make the greenies and chavs squirm.

I'm finding it hard to think of something that isn't taxed - oh yes, why don't they tax you for having sex with your wife.
Funnily enough, the first eMail 'circular' I saw was on this topic. It went along the lines of "They've taxed the booze, they've taxed the fags, now they're going to tax the shags".

Must have been 13-14 years ago now. Anyone else remember it?

being able to spend your own money.

If labor take the same approach to the current fiscal crisis as they did terrorism, im expecting a rush credit crisis bill whereby the government takes all our money, spends it on our behalf (we are clearly not to be trusted) and we have no legal redress whatsoever.

wait. my mistake. thats already happened.
