Dogs - A balanced diet

Dogbert enjoys a nice lump of apple occasionally and tonight has munched some banana and a jacobs cracker with a smidge of butter on it.

The odd finger of Real Ale is a treat too


It wont hurt him will it? He only has this once every couple of weeks if not once a month!

Not at all. Dogs are omnivores. Ours get carrots, peas, lettuce, potatoes etc.. as well now and again. On top of the usual meat treats..... Oh, and one dog will eat pickled onions....

The Ale however, I might draw the line at.

Hes strictly no choccies or anything and has the dentisticks to keep the nashers clean..

The ale is literally a finger dip!

I have a labrador - haven't yet found anything she won't eat.....


I tend to stick to plain rice or apple. But she gets sunday roast left overs including gravy, no problems.

A tiny bit of ale should not do him any harm as long as its not frequent, years ago I had a house warming party and some dozy decided it would be funny to give my dobermann some whiskey the poor little bd spent the next day sprawled in his bed groaning he obviously had a hangover.

Or at my mates party when somebody left a rather large quantity of weed on the table, that my mates dog ate in one go, queue spaced out springer for 2 days!!!

Dogs tend to eat anything within reach, only problem is that some of these things are poisonous to them. chocolate will kill them over time, onions and grapes will do the same. raisans can poison them. large amounts of brocholli can cause harm. most good dog web sites have lists of foods that harm dogs. my 2 staffies love apple, carrot, rice and pasta. a good balanced diet keeps them in great shape.hth

knocked over half a pint in the kitchen the other night. lets just say i had help mopping up, he's fine.

but yeah everyone says avoid giving him chocolate, i've never looked into why but not worth the risk. + more for me

the occasional slurp isnt going to make a difference. just avoid too many soft foods, especially meats, mega dog breath and dental bills

I didn't know about grapes and raisans- my son is always feeding them to my Staffy or he collects them as they fall from the high-chair.

I read up on the same topic . There's quite a lot of food we eat that is really harmful to dogs , it's a subject worth googling

TBH our old collie was a four legged trash compacter, curry, bread, cheese, olives, fish, peas, fruit, salad, everything. eta Wasabi too!!!

Also had a tendancy to try and pinch guinness and bitter, but wouldn't go near lager!!

The current collie pup is prooving to be just as unfussy!!! current favourite dish, my right arm ..... raw!

When we lived in the Philippines our dogs ate rice primarily. Surprised the hell out of me when I first saw it, but they love that stuff. I used to throw some eggs in the rice pot occasionally, or add a tin or two of sardines, or add dried corn, for variety. I also used to add curry powder some days, but I doubt they noticed, the stuff would go down the hatch so fast.

Went to the market one day, to buy some bones for them, nobody would believe I planned to give perfectly good bones to dogs!
