if you can get a nice table in the dining room at the shore cafe on sandbanks, the view is pretty cool

How about the Haven, also at Sandbanks, best spot on the peninsula.

stay at the Bournemouth Marriott and walk down the cliff path past the BIC to the West Beach restaurant, just west of the pier, right on the beach - great fish and they do a good steak as well.

+1 Nice place, friendly, last time we got talking to some Icelandic footballer and his wife, as our 2 yr old daughter had decided she was going to join their daughters for lunch. There was a live caterpillar in the salad but other than that, it's good.

Another 2 places I really like and have been to several times
1) Westbeach, Bournemouth. On the seafront, near the main pier. Very good food.
2) Crab House Café, on Chesil Beach between Portland and Weymouth. Fantastic seafood, all local, all fresh. So fresh the lobsters are kept live in tanks between catching and you eating them.

also pretty good are:
3) Aruba - actually on the pier in Bournemouth. Been there once, for lunch, during the air show.
4) Haven Hotel restaurant, Sandbanks.
5) The Sands brasserie in the Sandbanks Hotel is also not bad, has numerous AA rosette thingies.

Not "seafront", but "harbourside":

About 10 minutes drive from Exeter. Very good seafood.

you beat me to it.. by far the best suggestion so far.

Still love the crab house cafe though, it looks just like a shack and is a simple informal affair inside, tables outside as well, and the food is simply superb. However I should add that you can't actually see the sea from it, but the sea is a short scramble up Chesil Beach which is simply stunning - if you walk north along it you're on a pebble beach with water on both sides. Or head up into Portland for an amazing view.

My missus has just won a freebie for us to this place for 2 nights from her work.

Looks like a quaint, quiet place and fantastic views, but quite a way west of your target area. Maybe someone has already been and can provide you with an idea of what it is really like.

here ye go

http://www.west-beach.co.uk/ - in b'mouth
http://www.cafeshore.co.uk/ - sandbanks
http://www.fjbhotels.co.uk/our-hotels/the-sandbank...
http://www.crabhousecafe.co.uk/ - near weymouth

BTW in case you didn't already know, Sandbanks is just down the road (or you can walk there along the beach, it's about 4 miles) from B'mouth so you could go to westbeach for dinner and Café Shore for lunch the next day, something like that.

Cheers Munky, the GF isn't that impressed with Bournmouth, i know the town reasonably well but not the hotels/restaurants. Thanks for the links biggrin

If i can find a nice place overlooking the sea that does good food and wine i think she'll be persuaded (maybe...)
