Ok, so I've been handed a months notice, then I'm redundant. I've expected this for a while and have put "Plan-B" into full swing... I'm going travelling for a year or so! I have about 15k saved that I want to spend in that time, where would you advise me to go/avoid??? Personal experiences of the area you're talking about would be greatly appreciated. The way I see it is, if i dont go now I'll probably not get chance to do it later in life.

All crazy ideas considered...I will be doing the Top Gear Na'am route on a scooter if I can and I'd also like to do some charity work while in South America at some point.

One of those "round the world" air tickets is probably the first thing on your shopping list then! Good luck.

Minimum 3 months in New Zealand would be my advice. Buy a van in the big market in Auckland on the way in and sell it in Christchurch on the way out.

I have family in NZ so something like that would be cool. He is a snowboard instructor so I plan on getting him to teach me too!

i know people won't take this comment in the spirit that its intended, but MarkH - you lucky lucky bd!

biggrin 15k in the bank, the world is your lobster........you will have lifechanging experiences.

I mentioned on another thread - i'm going to do something very very similar when my contract ends.....soon. As there is no point in sitting in this country wasting money - when you could see the world for a lot less!

The jobs market won't pick up for at least a year.

For me it will be - Japan, China, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, OZ, NewZealand.......

do you Scuba Diving courses, do your sailing courses.........

brilliant.

PS - my budget is also 15k per year.......(i was planning on taking a bit longer)

excellent work! biggrin

Cheers fella, I'm 24 and dont want to come back to the UK, I want to so something scary and exciting with my life before Kids and a wife come along, I have my degree, a good set of references from previous employers so my career will be waiting for me when I get back. Scuba Diving is also on my list, as is Tokyo/Sydney. I have more saved but I dont want to spend it all. Id like a bit of a buffer to sit on when I come home to arrange another job.

Good luck to you mate!

To echo the comments on costs...

A pal of mine left the UK, landed in India slowly moving east taking in places such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand before coming back a year or so later.

He spent just less than half of what you have and had a fantastic time.

can't argue with any of that mate. I'm a lot older than you (33)......I have lots of friends in IT - and i mean lots. Everyone does a year or two inbetween contracts........and every one of them - without exception has had a fantastic time.

My advice FWIW would be get yourself an IPHONE, and one of those Olympus Cameras that are pretty much unbreakable......a good pair of boots, some shades.........then fill the rest of your backpack with condoms... ;-)

Surely something more durable (like a basic Nokia) that is completely unlocked and unbranded would be better, so he can use local sim cards and those international sims?

An iPhone is a good shout - but disable the internet stuff before you leave! The reason I say it's a good idea is because when we went we took tons of pics, and brought our 60gig Video iPod along as a portable storage device. You can buy a cable to connect your camera to the iPod, and it just whisks the pics off the camera, very handy.
