I have 2 labradoodles who are often looked after by a relative during the working day. unfortunately when they are at her house they enjoy barking at pretty much anything that they hear or see out the window. my gran seems to resist all common forms of training the dogs or asserting her dominance over them so i suppose to an extent she's brought this upon herself.
since she wont do anything herself is it worth trying one of those sonic devices that activates when the dog barks? I've seen them from £20 to over £100, obviously i want to spend as little as possible! are there any products anyone here has good experience of using?
Thanks

I'd suggest you need to find someone different to provide care for the dogs. They are getting two different parenting styles and so don't know how to behave.
I doubt it's just the barking going on, if your gran isn't in control of them I imagine their whole behaviour is different when they are there and you may be storing up problems for the future.
I have no experience of anti-bark collars, I know they do tend to polarise opinons. In my view if the dogs aren't being told that their behaviour is wrong then just inflicting pain on them is going to make them very confused.
If you do get one and don't keep it could you send it to my next door neighbour for their bleeding Rottie which they say they can't stop barking...

We've got one of these:

Visually and to hold its quite tacky, but it seems to do the job.
I think we paid nearer to £20 for ours.

My OH's parents had a dog they couldn't stop barking, tried about 3 different collars, each one worked for a while but then she just got used to them. We took her a few years ago, and when she barks she is told to stop, and she does. I'd say find someone else who can assert enough dominance to control them.
Before you punish the action with a collar try the reward system.
While the dog is actually barking make a sharp loud sound. The dog will be distracted and momentarily stop what he is doing. Give treat and praise immeadiatly.
This isn't magic, it needs to be repeated quite a few times, but should work.
Note you are rewarding the "non barking".
Dogs respond to bribary almost as well as politicians.

Ours goes out for a pee early in the morning but knows damn well not to bark outside and she's only a pup...
The problem with the use of aversives is that the dog can associate it with something completely different, eg dog barks at kid next door. Dog gets an aversive (water, citrus spray, shock, jar of pebbles, whatever). Dog then associates pain with kid next door. Problem worsened
Really, either your gran needs to look after your dogs properly or you need to find someone else who can. Already been said that there may be other things going on, and how to teach 'quiet'

To those who posted about having issues with barking dogs.. you know if it really is a problem and has been going on for a while you can contact 'the council' and they can see about putting a stop to it!
(noise nuisance act and all that.. never did think my degree would ever be useful but for knowing your rights it comes up trumps!)

I realise its really my gran's shortcomings rather than "bad dogs" when i'm there they will behave but the second i leave then they start playing up. the difficult thing is that the dogs are really the only thing in my grans life and she loves them dearly. she's not stupid but she is stubborn and despite being presented with sensible ways to train the dogs she just does her own thing. i suppose my question should have been how do i train my gran to look after our dogs!!

Tell her that people will complain about the dogs barking and she will have an ASBO shoved on her, plus the dogs taken away.Steamer said:

a dog barking in a monotonal, repetetive sort of way is probably frustrated, under-exercised and is starting to develop behaviour patterns similar to those seen in under-stimulated zoo animals. bit different to un-disciplined dogs barking at someone going by? Is the beagle like this? If so, it's a case for the RSPCA inspector as it's neglect...

I tried that with my council and they didn't want to know.
Additionally, they wanted me to find out which house the dog lived at. It could have been any house of six or seven due to the geography.
I told them I wasn't a detective and perhaps they ought to do some work themselves. Useless.
In the end I wrote letters to all the suspect houses myself, which stopped it. Almost. But quite why the wretched council couldn't do the same is beyond me.
I could quite happily poison or shoot stupid barking mutts, but I believe the punishment for doing so is quite harsh, probably more than killing a human being would get you!!
I dont like dogs much in this whole "aw, he's my firend" pathetic sort of way, a working dog is fine as it has a purpose, but we have a neighbour with a stupid barking mutt and if there is a device you cdont have to attach directly to the dog that might discourage it Id like to know about it.

Try being a little less intolerant of things YOU don't like. It might just make you a nicer person, you never know
