Now, is it just me, or have all the prices gone back to where they were when it was 17.5%.

I bought something from a vendor not so long ago (£79.99) and they took off a couple of quid due to the lower VAT.

I bought a very similar product and now it's gone back up to £79.99.

It must be the rate of inflation at 2.5%!

Please tell me that you weren't naive enough to believe that it was going to save you any money? The whole VAT drop idea was a complete waste of time, the logic being that if you were willing to pay the price before then you'll be willing to pay the price now, it's just that the supplier makes 2.5% more profit. Or not as the case may be.....

Old Price Gross = 117.50 where VAT component (@17.5%) is 17.50. Net=100

New Price Gross = 117.50 where VAT component (@15%) is 15.33 (ish) Net=102.17

Increase 2.17% actually.

Did you really think prices would drop, let alone stay down? The cost to businesses to re-price everything would be huge.

Obviously, Gordon did, but he's a halfwit.

Well of course I didn't - but it's taken me a while to notice.

So prices are the same, the tax take is slightly down, and I am no better off.

That is an insult to halfwits - he is more a twunt.

that's an insult to twunts. Gordon brings his own unique set of problems with insults, there really is nothing low enough.

i was under the impression that the VAT cut was to help small businesses, not the consumer?

most places i spend money have passed on the cut, but there are some exceptions - all small businesses / small traders. my dad had to wind up his company prior to the rate cut so i can understand why some might need that extra 2%.

Sorry but the logic doesn't work, because if my supplier does the same then my purchase costs have risen by 2.17% aswell. So effectively it only gives you a really tiny bit of a bigger slice of whatever your profit margin is.

It's a con, always was, always will be.

And I'd wager that the extra money small businesses have had to spend getting their systems updated will outstrip the reduction.

Has anyone's business been saved by this move?

Get off Pistonheads with that attitude. You can only come back when you promise to make a disparaging, yet unsubstantiated, remark about Gordon Brown.

Technically speaking, you are correct.

However, the admin hassle and bother caused by the change caused more problems than leaving the rate alone.

And it's supposed to be changing again in a few months.

So no, it was a stupid idea.

Removing the 1% they recently put on Small business Corp tax would have been far more effective Imho
