Ok so we are printing more money to shore up the economy.

From history this can and usually does lead to extremely high inflation.

Do you think in the next 5 years that the UK will be heading towards high inflation, high interst rates, and high unemployment?

Recent history in Japan hasn't shown that printing money has any impact at all.

I am not sure - I gather that the first phase will be carefully monitored to see how it works.

If it doesn't work then maybe hyperinflation isn't too bad. At least we can all pay off our mortgages from a week's worth of unemployment benefit.

I have little doubt we're in for a bumpy ride, but next Zimbabwe - not a chance. For all old Blighty's faults, we have an abundance of educated people with more skills than you can shake a stick at. I know that on PH we seem to enjoy knocking our own country, but the reality is, that we'll get through this tricky period. Labour will lose the the next election and a new Tory government will begin the long task of rebuilding our country. Pretty much as Margaret Thatcher had to do last time. I expect once the Tories have repaired the damage inflicted by Blair/Brown and Co; the foolish British electorate will vote in another profligate labour Government; to complete the cycle and drive us back to near bankruptcy. That seems to be the story since WW2 and until we learn that the Socialists are incapable of running the economy properly, we are doomed to repeat the same mistake over and over again.

I disagree, I think we will have a one term tory government followed by a Labour government - which each new administration being worse than the one that proceeds it.

I think our politicians are chancers, bordering on dishonest. In Zimbabwe, they are outright crooks and murderers. If anyone thinks they can draw parallels between Zimbabwe and the UK, they seriously need counseling.

UK prime ministers are not elected and I understand never have been. You vote for your local member of Parliament and those who form the largest party have that party leader (usually) become the our prime minister.

Depends on interpretation. Our politicians are all in it for themselves, not for the greater good of the community/country, and thats where it starts to go very wrong.

Take Ms Smith - YES, you're 'honest' in that you've playe by the books, to the letter of the policies, but basically she's done all she could to take he tax payer for in excess of £100k because she's "entitled" to it.

Does it make it right? It would be nice if people like her did what was morally right instead of feathering their nests.

It seems to be if you can deliver and ear those sorts of benefits, you work in industry. If you're incapable, the governent is there for you.

Your talking about a UK government who just burried the fact that they prosecuted an illigal war and cost many 10,00's or 100,000's of lives...

All this doom-mongering and goddamm negativity!

A thought to end the day:

Mr Pork, you are absolutely right. However, in Zimbabwe the electorate does not get to know about their politician’s dishonesty and even if they did, WTF could they do about it. The current bunch of Government Ministers in our country has demonstrated they have no shame, but with luck next year they'll be consigned to ignominious history. Mugabe's lot will only leave office in coffins.

John Major wasn't elected either IIRC. But let's be honest here - most of the people who elected labour back in did it on the strength of a certain Mr Blair - the same chap now earning a million pounds an hour or something! They knew Brown was going to get in, but voted them back into power based on good ol' Tone with the cheesey smile. 2 years to the majority of labour electors (muppets)was a long way away! rolleyes

Back on topic... no, UK will not go the same way as Zimbabwe. As already mentioned, Japan has done this before without any detrimental effect to their economy.
