My gas bill for the last quarter was £600 - that's for a 3 bed fairly modern detached with a gas fire in the living room. The heating is on all day beacuse my OH is at home on maternity leave. Gas used for heating, water and oven. Double glazed. Thermostat set to 18C.

Now is there a mistake somewhere or is that within the realms of possibility?

No I am sure you are in good company. When I bought this house some 15 years ago it was a cold winter. I turned the stat on the boiler upto 5 out of 6. 3 Months later I too got a gas bill for some £600 odd. I rang the gas company and they told me that when the stat is right up, I am burning it as fast as they can pipe it to me eek

I have since changed the radiators to decent sized ones (all the rads were the same size so the central heating company which installed it were cowboys). Now the house is warm, the boiler is on 2.5 and the gas bills are £80pm in the winter and £10pm in the summer.

Get someone in to look at your system and see if its working correctly. Plan B - ask Ferg biggrin

mine was £90, 4 bed victorian terrace, double glazed but no cavity insulation. i only use gas for daily showers and cooking, i prob had the heating on for 2 weeks over winter at a constant '3' on the boiler panel [goes up to 7] but otherwise on for a couple of hours on the odd day. i only heat the rooms i use regularly - about half the house.

based on that i could easily surpass £600 with more people in the house and the boiler working all day every day.

fairly modern (late 60's) semi detached 3 bed. i got a 410 bill for the last quarter, My wife is also maternity leave so the heating is on 20c constantly since jan.
I too was alittle shocked at the cost!

edited to add, that we didn't spend part of nov and all of dec at home but at parents. so the bill should have been closer to £600. still bloody expensive.

OK, thanks. Sounds like it is stupidly expensive but not 'added on an extra nought' human-error type mistake.

My bill was £1300 for Gas and leccy for the from Nov to Jan, 670 of that being Gas. I live in a 70's 3bed detached house and i also had a go at them for getting it wrong until i checked the meters and they were not far off. frown
Although the CH was on constant during this time as the missus and the kid feel the cold.

Could be a mistake - my bill for the last quarter was lower than that, and for the whole period of that bill we had substantial parts of the roof and walls missing covered only with some loose tarps, so the wife had the heating on 24/7 (man made global warming? woman made global warming maybe, directly from my radiators...)

Jesus. At paolow towers i felt hard done by for my bills (heating/lights/water/cooking) being adjusted upwards from £50 per month to £65 following a long cold winter. Think ill stop moaning!

My OH comes back from a night out when the rest of us are in bed, feels a little cold so wacks the thermostat to 35!!!!

I wake up an hour or so later with every ounce of moisture drained out of me feeling like that spider attacked body at the beginning of Arachniphobia.

She will also have the heating on and then go to bed with the portable A/C unit on as she likes the noise. WTF!!

I am dreading the next bill, as this time of year the gas/electric is normally around £500 but are we not going to be hit by that 40% rise.

Don't worry, Global Warming means that we won't have to heat our houses in future..................................

Or, in the real world, it's going to be rather cold over the next few years and with gas/leccie prices shooting up at an alarming rate, things are going to get very difficult...
