So I thought that, with the wife no longer bringing any money in and my work situation pretty dire, I would give this Aldi a go.

First of all its a 30 mile round trip, so that's around £4 or £5 in petrol already but hey it's a nice day and I've always wanted to see Walton on Thames.

Well the store was clean and quiet with good parking below, althouigh there were no brands that I recognised apart from Kingfisher Beer which was 50p cheaper than my Sainsburys.

I did a big shop and spent just over £60 which easily would have been £80 odd in Sainsburys but the OH will go mad when she finds the "Mammia" nappies that I bought instead of our usual Huggies, but they were half the price.

Bet the feckers leak at the first p!55 tho'.

There are one or two things of dubious quality in Aldi, but after using them for all shopping for the last 18 months I can say I'm pretty impressed.

I'm amazed Aldi have set up shop in Walton on Thames. I would have expected M&S, Waitrose etc:. OMG, the recession has really reached the stockbroker belt.

Aldi's great. It's not a typical budget supermarket, as you said, it's more like a continental supermarket.

Since this whole credit crisis thing it's become very middle class too.

I use Aldi for all my "speciality" purchases, cured meats, cheeses, antipasta, pasta sauces etc. Those all seem good quality for a price much less than you'd pay in Tesco / Sainsburys etc.

I also buy stuff like tinned tomatoes, bread, biscuits, jams etc.

I'm not sure you'd do a full weeks shop there though, so end up using Tesco for the bits that Aldi don't do!

Yep! we could do with one here in SW London. Waitrose, M&S and Sainsburys are too fekin' expensive and the prices go up weekly. Can of coconut milk has gone from 78p to 129p in 10 months.

They have just opened a fekin' Carluccio's down the road. WTF!

My local corner store now sells milk at a much cheaper price than Sainsburys.

Formerly rich people have now moved into the poor people category.

I've only shopped at Aldi once and this was in Dijon. A pretty soulless experience as I remember and a long wait at the checkout. Although this was on a Saturday morning; I imagine their busiest day. My nearest store is I think about 15 miles away in Ruislip, a bit far for grocery shopping, although I'd definitely try it, if they had a store closer to home.

Every time I've tried Aldi, Lidl et al. I've had to then go to Tesco or Sainsbury's on the way home to pick up all the stuff the budget place didn't have...

Sad, I know, but we found the Mammia nappies to be much better than Pampers and Huggies.
