Could you wakeboard behind a C130 Hercules in flight?

I mean, "Air Board" if you like in mid air not on water, but on a similar set up to that used behind a speed boat, out of the open cargo bay door at the back of a Hercules at mid speed, 100-140mph?

I have based my calculations on a flapping hand out of the window of my car on the way to work, and lift to surface area might just provide enough resistance for an average squaddie with a 2m2 board. I clearly was limited to 70mph so my equations may go to pot at higher air speeds. Larger fins will be required for stability I appreciate that.

Have a go and find out.

(Make sure you pack a main parachute and reserve).

Based on how my arms feel after 15 mins wakeboarding at around 20/30mph

I would say no.

What an odd question. Are you planning on trying this?

What a brilliant idea!

What I suspect would happen would be that the moment the board hit an angle whereby it started acting like a giant airbrake, you would be ripped away from the aircraft (possibly minus your arms), and scream all the way down to your certain death.

I think it would end badly.

But there have been plenty of silly things done with hercules, according to a mate who useed to tfly them. They developed a method of dropping inflatables out the back - at very low altitude - with the engine already running and the guys sat inside. Apparently the injury rate was so high they stopped!

Until you said "engines running" I was picturing inflatable lilos/dolphins/rubber rings/general beach stuff with a load of bermuda short wearing squaddies leaping into the sea off gibraltar! smile

Don't see why not...

There a chap that "sky surfs" - jumps out of a plane with a board strapped to his feet and flies about. can't se why he can't do that with a bit of rope in hand first wink

The nutter has gone on record that he wants to do a jump using just a board to control his speed, so no need for a 'chute yikes
