Today i was working near a tower block (blackmore tower in south acton west london)As it happens this is where my family were moved to when i was a kid in 1969.

Anyway, got to be careful here, but i know the sort of people who are put in here nowadays and i know at least 80% are on benefit(at least).I look up and from the bottom to the 24th floor every flat has a great big sky dish sticking out from it.

I work my b######s off ,my wife works ,and we can't justify the £40+ a month this would cost us.

Something is very wrong with this country and i seem to get more and more wound up about it,maybe i should just chill.

dont let it worry you - you probably have things they don't such as a car, foreign holidays, newer clothes, a better house and a better social life.

if i was at home all day i wouldn't spend anything and would want sky. that's only a cost of £40

i do know what you mean though
Yes buddy ,your probably right and no i wouldn't swap places with them. It's a fair point you make.

Installations over 40ft need the specialist squad of Taffy's to come and do it. iirc it cost me £40 each time as I've had it done on two *cough* penthouse suites.

They weren't just top floor flats Capish.

I know exactly how you feel. I was a single (working) mum 12 years ago. My TOTAL take home pay was £382 month (I worked part time). I lived in a housing association house, ran a car (so I could get to work) and apart from maintenance from my ex husband, which paid my rent and council tax, I supported myself and daughter completely. Because I worked over 16 hours a week, I got NOTHING to help me live.

My next door neighbour was a big fat lazy, nosy chav bh who had never been married to her child's father (she was a slag as well and probably didn't even know who the father was). She'd never worked a day in her life and claimed full benefits. She ran a car, got her rent and council tax paid AND had SKY TV, plus her daughter was spoilt brat who went without nothing.

Although I wouldn't want to swap places with her because she was a loser who never amount to anything, and nor will her child(ren), it does make me angry that she certainly didn't struggle on the benefits system, and her social life was definitely better than because she could afford one!

Do they??

Last time I got some junk mail from Sky, I didn't notice anything about it being free to the unemployed.

Personally I think they should pay double, as they spend more time watching it.

I'm in the same position as you. Purchased my first ever brand new TV this year, I'm 26! I can't justify £40 a month for sky (which is what you'd need to pay if you want more than the basics that are pretty much covered by freesat).

As it happens, a close friend started as a PCSO a few months back. As a way to introduce himself to the community and to find their concerns he was involved in a house to house questionnaire. He was astounded at the number of council house dwelling, unemployed families who had Sky and big plasma/LCD TVs.

Benefits are supposed to keep you from poverty, not allow the recipient opportunities to buy luxuries that I myself had to work hard and save to buy.

There's something to be said for using food and clothing vouchers only.

I was talking to a friend last week who is a TV aerial installer.

He was telling me his company had been given the contract by the local ALMO to supply/erect/maintain digital TV aerials to all their tower blocks in preparation for the switch over.

They were 14 storeys up a 22 storey block and were pelted with rubbish, spat at and someone even threw used toilet paper yikes at them in their cradle thing.

The people responsible are mostly on benefits (whilst drug dealing and stealing cars), receiving the housing free of charge and are being given free upgrades to allow them to continue to watch TV yet they resort to this.

Words were said to a few residents by the contractors but in the end they pulled off the job therefore losing the contract.

It is a fking disgrace that this is allowed to happen.

Actually why did i post the above, that's not how i honestly feel at all.I will never forget when i went in the post office to collect my mum's £70 a week pension .In front of me was a woman of about mums age(not of this country)stuffing and i do mean stuffing money into different pockets of her coat which the post office lady was handing over.

Thinking about my dad who was still welding at 78 years old because he didn't have a company pension.I started to well up inside feeling every kind of emotion from anger ,frustration and yes hate i'll admit it hate.

This country is a joke ,there needs to be a revoloution ,it won't happen ,the silent majority will just keep quiet and there heads low and i'm one of them. This country has gone to the dogs ,that's how i really feel.

At risk of being ripped to shreds here... I'd put money on the TV's being knock off or Brighthouse specials and the Sky being a £75 Argos package that give them 3 months free viewing - after that you just get freeview unless you continue to pay.
People who live like that dont think the same as you and I would i.e shopping to them is 3kg of value chips and 100 iceland chicken nuggets for a £1 headed straight for the deep fat fryer, 10 litres of value cola and 200 Richmond superkings is seen by many people as being able to feed a family quite well for a week! No wonder they have money for Sky and Moody Gold!

See I don't see how that adds up.
Bumped into one of my mates from way back a couple of years back, she was (on the face of it) in a similar situation.
She'd recently booted out her waster of a bloke after 10 years of trying to make a man out of him, had 2 kids to bring up and was on benefits.

She was skint! Yes she did run a car on a shoestring budget, but for the sole reason that she had kids and needed to ferry them around to their various activities. But other than that she had very little in the way of luxury and had to be very creative indeed to make ends meet and give her kids a decent upbringing.

She has a job now after a good couple of years of knock backs and let downs and things are a little better. Now she is an intelligent, resourcefull resilient sort of person. She bettered herself in part because she had the character and self belief to do it. Not everyone is blessed with that.

Of course she also has a work ethic and a sense of being prepared to contribute, not just take.

Unless the woman you mention was on the scam somewhere, I doubt her existence was as comfortable as you may have thought.

Her existence was comfortable. She was certainly a lot better off than I was.

I couldn't afford to go out drinking every weekend, if I saved up my money, I could just about afford one night out a month, but she was out every weekend. I had to save up to buy Little Trackside's Christmas and Birthday presents, but her daughter had new dolls or clothes every week. There's no way I could afford to pay for any kind of "luxury" tv channels because we would have had to give up food for a week.

Maybe she was on the game or something, (although I doubt any man, no matter how desperate would pay to shag that hideous banshee), but she definitely had more money than I did.

Not going to rip into you at all as those are my thoughts to

Most of the real dodgy ones would have one of the bent virgin box's anyway so the dish is just there from a bygone install.

some people know how to work the system
ppl near me were married and had two children and didnt work in all the time i have known them
but they go on holiday every eyar (not abroad but to the coast in august or july) have huge plasma flat screen tv thing, full sky plus and all channels and big package, a pc and laptops, all have mobile phones -good near top of the range-, they dont drive but always having driving lessons (the mum), always have money to go to shop and for baccy and papers, children are well clothed and all brand new

and you know how you and others struggle and wonder why.
