Neighbours' in shock as multi-storeycar park springs up overnight
Outraged householders living in Waterloo Road, Linslade, have slammed London Midland's decision to construct a Meccano-style 'decking' car park at the town's railway station.
Work on the new car park started on Friday evening and on Monday morning workmen were fitting the guardrails to the top deck, which overlooks the rear gardens of Waterloo Road and the children's playground in nearby Linslade rec.
Nick Mylius, who lives at number 24, said the car park had blighted his and his neighbours' lives in a single weekend. He said: "We have lost the privacy in our gardens and houses.
"Our homes have been devalued and are prone to 24-hour light pollution, car lights, exhaust fumes, crime, and litter.
"Many in the street knew nothing about this, and London Midland and Network Rail gave us no notification or consultation – only an A4 sheet placed in the station on Wednesday.
"The project has been, it seems, in development way before this.
"This is not the correct place for a multi-storey car park. There are better options and people will still not pay the entry charge if they can park elsewhere for free.
"I thought we were encouraging alternative methods of transport in Leighton Buzzard."
Neighbour Sacha Griffin said she was also concerned about the loss of privacy and feared residents' security had been jeopardised.
She said: "People will be able to look down into our gardens where children are playing and at night headlights will be shining directly into our bedrooms. Why didn't anyone consult us and listen to our opinions?"
Katherine Hammond of number 16 said she was "shocked" that train operators London Midland could abitrarily construct the car park without any apparent thought for its effects on people living in its shadow.
"We're quite a close community, respectful of each other, and enjoy our gardens. We won't be able to do that now and we're already getting litter blown over from the workmen."
The protestors are meeting with town and district councillors tomorrow, Wednesday.
The chairman of South Beds District Council's planning committee, Councillor Alan Shadbolt, said he had every sympathy with those affected, but London Midland is an independent statuary body and does not need planning permission for the car park.
He said: "They can just go ahead and do it, without any consultation with neighbours.
"There's not a lot we can do, but we are investigating to see if there is anything we can do to soften the blow."
A London Midland spokesman said the job is expected to be finished on Friday.
The spokesman said: "The new facilities are part of London Midland's plans to provide over 3,000 extra car parking spaces at its stations along the West Coast Mainline and elsewhere in its network. London Midland is investing over £5 million in improving car parking."
My Mylius said that nothing short of demolition would satisfy the protestors.
"We will continue our campaign for the removal of this multi-storey eyesore that has changed our homes and gardens forever," he said.
"They put it up in two days and they can take it down in two days

They did it the same at a nearby Tesco store as a temporary measure.
There didn't seem to be any issues, but it wasn't in a particularly residential location.
the tesco ones are temporary car parks by Another Level and are errected whilst the stores are undergoing extension/refurbishmentThere didn't seem to be any issues, but it wasn't in a particularly residential location.
tesco don't need planning for those as they're struck within 2 months (temporary structure)

phil - did they really not notify any residents?
alex - no, I'm no where enar there, am just looking into this as I've a fairly similar issue at work
There was a notice put up at the station a few days before, however they didn't go into too much (there are two car parks at the station). alex - no, I'm no where enar there, am just looking into this as I've a fairly similar issue at work
Apart from that there was no notification - it could have been managed slightly better (even though they don't need planning permission for it).
There is a similar structure at Tring but it doesn't back on to people's houses.

no, I need to erect a semi-permament car park (up to 12 months) but am trying to work out if I need PP and how to manage it with the residents so I don't end up with a load of hostiles chasing me everytime I turn up on site
If they are that worried about their privacy, why do they give all their details to the local newspaper to publish locally and on the internet.
From that article you can glean that Nick Mylius lives at 24 Waterloo Road, Sacha Grifin lives next door and Katherine Hammond lives at number 16.
I am not sure I would want my address details publishing, especially if it was in an article complaining about lack of privacy....
