I think chickens (the ones we eat) get too heavy to fly at a fairly young age.
Hens (they lay eggs) are all Skin & bones and they can fly a little (I have quite a lot and they roost on the roof beams and fly down in the morning.)
(I remember somone explaining white meat was for short bursts of energy and brown meat was for more sustained activity, hens, which don't fly often, have white meat (except for legs), whereas ducks which do fly have brown meat.
So I'm going with no chickens can't fly (but Hens can a little)
Eta my generalisation of Hens & Chickens is the modern day hybrids bred for different purposes
