Just suppose you were a complete weather nerd, and you've set up your own weather station, and you share the data on the internet for free.
http://www.stamb.net/razdel/station/
Out of the blue these folk
http://www.iw-concepts.de/
e-mail asking for details of your station, and can you send monthly summaries of wind direction and speed.
Would you be tempted to hold your hand out for a share of their four billion dollar budget for new wind turbines, seeing as how you're saving them a fortune in research, and your station is the only one recording for 100Km in any direction? How big a wedge would you ask for?

Do it. Don't charge them a penny - it's for the planet!

(* make sure you frig the data so that there's no chance they'll come and install a great big wind farm on your doorstep. Windy? Here sir? No sir, hardly ever get any wind here. Very still place this....)

Whatever you think you're worth, and whatever you think they'll pay. Make sure you get the fee agreed BEFORE you send any information.

If they won't pay, tell them where to go.

Unless you want to be charitable. But as they're a business.......

Treat it as a business proposal. You are making daily data available via your web site that they can access free of charge. However, they appear to need the data in batches covering monthly periods for their research purposes and they probably don't want to spend time doing the collation themselves.

Perhaps you should instigate a conversation with them to see what exactly what they want and in what format. If you can service their requirements then negotiate a price and get a written contract detailing fees payable, payment terms (30 days etc) and length of contract including severance period from either party. You could also offer to provide further information if they can provide more equipment to you and it is realisitic for you to provide this service for them.

Up to you really but you could get them to pay for your service, provide a few toys to increase the service and your interest in it (and keep them after contract ends) and put a few bob in the bank.

Thanks, Grey Ghost, and everyone else, the information they require is very technical, the computer crunches the daily data and produces monthly reports for wind-run, speed over time, and delivered energy which calculates the actual energy a 'perfect' turbine would have produced over the month. If I don't provide that information they'll have to come and build their own tower to get their own information.

We are discussing their needs and what's in it for me, hopefully we'll reach agreement before they discover that last year there was virtually no wind at all from May to September.

My commitment will be to have the computer send an e-mail automatically every month, it would be nice if it earned me a bob or two.
