Following on from the "How low will house prices go?" and "Does Labia always leave UK PLC on it's knees?" threads I thought I'd ask the question - how high do you think unemployment will go?

Given that I think we're at the start of something really bad here and the rate of job losses is going to accelerate/snowball just how bad will this go? Current numbers are ~2 million (obviously not including "long term sick", "carers" and others kept off the stats).

My own reckoning is between 5 and 7 million. I have no idea if getting another government in will help this or if it is now inevitable.

(The government themselves must be anticipating a lot as they're recruiting Jobcentre staff at a bit of a rate).

This is shaping up to be a depression I fear. So a minimum of 4 million.

I thought that the 'real' unemployment figure is over 5 million already. If you add the ex-directory lot - incapacity benefit (lazy, not real cases), job training benefits etc, and not to mention all those gimps that are unemployable in the real World that the Government 'invented' jobs for (SCP's, statistic collectors, people to ensure equality in the workplace etc etc), then comparing like for like with the early 1980's then unemployment would be around 6 million today.

Unfortunatly the Government has been sweeping the problem under the carpet for a decade, and now the lump has got so big they can no longer hide it.

The first step would be to find out how high unemployment actually is. With the classification system as it is, I fear it is much higher than figures suggest.

True enough

My figure above is for those who have any interest in seeking work.

Everyone in the world will be unemployed before the end of this Great Depression (for that is what it will be named and studied as in future text books) except for the self-serving politicians - who will drive around (oh, and chauffers will have jobs) taking pot-shots (oh, and arms and munition makers will have jobs) at us as we drag our unwashed, starving bodies around the streets - scavenging litter for a meal. Stepping lagubriously over those that fall before us, bitterly cursing the diseases that stop them from becoming the source of a meal.

Then, and only then, will you truly understand your wanton raping of the financial system and YOUR PART IN IT! in financing that stereo cassette deck all those years ago and it's downfall. NOW you will PAY THE PRICE and SUFFER!!!!1!One!Eleven.
