About US$40Bn, according to the news tonight.

Even at a flat 1% p.a. return, that would give him $400M p.a. or over $1m per day.

At his peak he was worth $120+bn

He's lost some in stock, given tons away to his foundation etc but here:

http://philip.greenspun.com/WealthClock

Says $41bn for now.

There is some serious jealousy on that site.

The equivalent of a dozen giant anteaters hoovering up 10 dollar bills at 1 a second, working 24 hours around the clock.

Oddly enough, Bill Gates has to be one of the most generous men on the planet. Considering he's still worth several carmaker bail outs in the current climate tells me he's not going to worry about paying the heating bills or visa bill for a while.

Article today in our local rag about how "poor" the top earners have got. Bill Gates was at 1st Position with ONLY 35.4 billion Euros....
I don't know how accurate that is but hope it helps...

Didnt the CEO of HP give everything to charity when he died a few years ago...something like 30 billion?

IT billionaires, especially the americans are a credit to the human race and an example of why computer nerds are the 7337

IIRC the guy who owns Ikea is now richer than Bill Gates.

And he drives a Volvo 245- the man has taste! Don't know if it's a turbo or not.

No doubting generosity - but is this not to try to help him get a nobel prize - something people say is his main goal in life now...(didnt warren buffet give $30b to gates' charity?)

Well, I have nothing but the upmost respect for the man - if you look at what he's achieved it's absolutely mind boggling, regardless of whether or not you agree with some of his tactics.

But anyone who says that he's "unethical" or other bks like that needs to take their head out of their ass, go look at how the world of business works, and perhaps compare him to some of the other multi-billionaires.

He's pretty much a saint next to each one of them!

If you're wondering what kind of guy he is, just watch this:

His house in only worth $90m and apparently is so tech-savvy that when the local planning officers went to give it is sign off, a few had to leave sharpish due to sensory overload. Google his house i think its a bit nicer than niceish.

Oh and has a garage full of Porsches and a McLaren. I believe he enjoys his wealth far more than is made out and well done to him.

His house is a technical masterpiece, and is probably worth all of $90m

Not sure about the cars - I know he had/has a 959 and I heard a rumour he has a 911. The program shown the other week with Fiona Bruce showed him driving to work in a Ford Focus saloon.

His passion for Porsche's is quite well known, including getting arrested for driving the backside out of a rented 911 in the late 70's/early 90's,

As the 959 wasn’t approved for use in the US, Gates allegedly lobbied for the creation of the US's show and display laws allowing significant but unapproved cars to be sold, registered and used for limited mileage.

His house is well worth a Google, yes it's not as OTT as Paul Allen's or Ballmer’s but IMHO a far more tasteful and useable place to live

Well maybe.

But it is rather easy to give away billions when you have billions more, no?

If he gave it all away and left himself with say $10 million, I'd agree with you immediately. But for someone with his level of wealth money becomes irrelevant - so he may have set himself another goal - a Nobel Prize for example.

I'm not being mean spirited here - I absolutely applaud his efforts although I think there are other areas he could also be supporting.

But which is the greater measure of a gift? Someone giving away £500 when their life savings are £1000, or someone giving £20 billion when they have 50 billion? Which would hurt more?
