Just idle curiosity really, but I have a chain saw with a two stroke engine, and just before it runs out of petrol it revs a lot faster. Why is this? I thought extra air in the mixture but it seems to go on a bit too long for it to be just that. Any ideas?

It is leaning out. Doesn't do the engine much good on a stroker tbh.

To be honest, it usually takes more than two strokes before I'm "out".

yea, i've noticed that as well, the all speed up just before they die, so i guess they run over-rich as default.
