I’m planning a TVR tour this September to Germany to drive the Alpenstrasse. Does anyone have recommendations on A/ Best route from the UK to the start and B/ Places to stay & see on the route ? Thanks Simon

I take it you want to cover miles fast before and after the route... assuming that...

Dover - Calais - Autoroute (tolls) to Reims - Metz - Strasbourg - Basel - Swiss Autobahn (vignette) to St Gallen - Bregenz (Austrian Autobahn Toll)

Do the drive..

End of the drive back to Kufstein - cross back to Austria (same Toll if done within 10 days of entering Austria) - Innsbruck - Arlberg Pass or Tunnel (extra toll) - Liechtenstein - Switzerland and back to Dover as route in.

Dover to Basel is an easy days drive approx 700km (don't stay in Basel expensive, stay on german side, can give you tips as I live there!)
Basel to Bregenz is about a 2 1/2 hours drive.....

In France be aware of "Pay as you go" tolls (new)

Swiss Vignette - buy it ONLY at e-vignette.ch the official Ch-Website (ANPR noted) - buy it at the border SFR 40,- (sticker) - BEWARE there are a lot of pirates on the internet selling fakes,
Swiss are VERY hot on speeding... in town 1kph over can cost, autobahn 10km over costs...go mad and you can lose the car!!!

Austrian Tolls at any petrol station in A but BEFORE you use the Autobahn - 10 day, 1 month or 12 month stickers for the windscreen, fines for non-display

If you want to "do" a bit of the Black Forest on the way, cross over from Strasbourg towards Offenburg D-Autobahn south, Offenburg, change to B33 - Gengenbach - Wolfach - Triberg - to B500 - Titisee - Waldshut-Tiengen - Cross border there to CH - join Ch-Autobahn to St Margretheh - Bregenz

Hope this helps....

Easy ? Google has it as 8 1/2 hours driving without breaks and about 830 km.

I did London to Baden Baden recently and that was 650 km.
Took me all day and I was tired, even in the Octavia.

In a TVR, with frequent fillups & lots of NVH, much harder work.
Is this TVR club going on holiday or is it an endurance test ?

Swiss Vignette
Those on a budget and keen drivers should avoid CH.
It's always been ultra expensive and the Swiss are punitive
about speeding.

CHF 50 (£45) for a single plate, no drinks, no starter, no afters
in ordinary pubs in quiet little towns like Laufenburg is just an example.

It's about 20 years since I last went to CH. I'll be leaving it a similar
time interval to the next visit. Austria has sensible prices, similar
mountains and the electrical sockets are EU standard.

Do it on the train. BB to Konstanz was lovely. Single fare of EUR 18 was a great
bargain. Probably cheaper than the petrol.

Google has it as 698 km and almost 7 hrs!!! calais-lörrach... as you're not driving on the ferrry

Prices in CH are high as I mentioned that's why you should avoid hotels in CH
