Battery light on, broken belt???

Was driving quite hard last night & suddenly got a constant tinging sound (initially sounded like a stone caught somewhere inside). Then the battery light came on.
After more thought, it sounded like a belt may have broken.

Any ideas? & it's a 97 s1

Also anyone know any specialists around S wales, because I don't fancy taking it to white dove.

Or your crankshaft pulley may have come loose, which can be nasty - can damage the end of the crankshaft :-(
