Just been out at the weekend with NE PHers. Had a great day, but suffering from that Elise problem - they all had roaring TVR, Noble, Holden etc and I could barely coax a purr.

I imagine a race exhaust will be my first stop. What it the Lotus kit like, or what other aftermarket stuff is good/cheaper. What other mods will make a difference - I don't want to go too far down the tuning route, as my car is an everyday toy, not a trackday special.

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Get the Best Of Barry White CD and a rocking ICE install Wendy. Turn the volume upto 11 and rip the knob off (cue drag)!

Nothing on this earth will make your car sound sexier that the walrus of lurrrve!

Edited to say sorry couldn't resist

I've got a Lotus Sport Exhaust and when it's nicely warmed up it purrs and growls beautifully. Not quite a V8 grumble but I'm told by a friend who was following me the other night that it sounded very, very nice.

Actually (and this is really sad), I did think about getting a CD of great engine noises and playing it with the top down!!! I don't think anyone would be fooled, though.

Sports Exhaust and Hurricane. I have the Magnex. A nice deep noise - I find the Janspeed a bit tinny.

Currently on the S2 I'd go for a larini.

Janspeed is horrible imho.

Benefit of Magnex is that's because it's a lotus part you don't really need to tell your insurance company.

Sounds clips of some here:

Larini:

Good details here:

Scuderia Systems do a sports exhaust for the Elise. If its anything like the Ferrari items they fit, you can't go wrong. If you go to their media files page there is an MPeg of an Elise speeding away from the camera, with good sound. www.scuderiasystems.com

Taking on board all your suggestions, should I do this through my local dealer (Formula 1 in Newcastle, they're alright) or try to find a specialist - nominations very welcome?

Any garage can fit an exhaust, it's definitely not the hardest thing you can do on an Elise. Trust me I fitted my exhaust with no problems!!

What do the different ones look like. I saw one the other day that was round at the end (rubbish discription i know) which was quite cool looking but I quite like the oval shape of the origional on the S2.

Round or oval, that's your options on the S2. Oval pipes are standard spec S2 style. Round exits are 111s/135r spec style to fit the different grills used with the fancier diffuser panel.

so do you mean the shape is dictated by the modle of car you have or do you have to go round when you upgrade?

Most aftermarket exhausts are one or the other or can provide both fitment styles, e.g. Larini only does a round exit but that will still fit through the standard model exhaust grills. JanSpeed offer either an oval pipe or a round pipe. Just something you should check out before ordering an exhaust if you want a specific style.

Rob

Hi Wendy

First things first, speak to Chris or Craig at Formula 1 - they will be happy to help. As with all dealers, they want to sell you their own "official" kit for your car, and usually it's more expensive.

Best thing to do is find out if the official Lotus S2 exhaust system is made by Magnex. If so get a price inc fitting and VAT from Formula 1 and also from Revolution motorsports in Gateshead, They are from memory an official Magnex dealer. For future ref. too, Formula 1 have just increased their workshop labour rate from a very competitive £42.50/hour to £60.00/hour (both exc VAT) and I guess that Revolution will be cheaper than £60.00/hour.

I have an S1 with a Janspeed system and I must say it is a bit "tinny" sounding, but with the cat removed my mates S1 sounds much more evil.

Hope this helps.

Paul - Black is best!
