There have been quite a few threads recently regarding sports exhaust for the elise. It appears that the majority of owners demand a better sound from the car.

My question is Lotus must know this so why is the general issue exhaust still so feeble sounding? Why havnt they upgraded it on the S2? Surley they are missing a trick because owners are out there purchasing exhausts from loads of different manufacturers .

EU type approval regulations mean a production-car exhaust can only produce something like up to 74dB and has to maintain this for at least 5 years.

Ever hear a bog standard Ferrari 360? It's almost totally silent.

'Sport' exhausts are actually not legal if they exceeed the original dB level of the factory exhaust, but this is quite a 'grey' area in most countries, so not actively checked unless the noise level causes complaints.

Bye, Arno.

Cheers arno, that makes sense but how do TVR get away with big noises from their V8s then, surely they would have to heavily silence them?

Interestingly, whilst at the Motor Show yesterday, I was interrogating one of the reps on the stand, and he pointed out that the yellow S2 Exige they had there was fitted with a sports exhaust which will soon be available for that car and the 111r.

I didn't get a good look as it as the car was at an angle, but it looked pretty beefy. No change in position though - straight through the central diffuser as usual.

Lotus have alwasys offered one as an option - usually Janspeed or Magnex marked up by about £100!

I didn't realize that any were yet available for the Toyota-powered cars. Mark that up as old news!

TVR pretty much still put all their cars through SVA or a similar very low volume process and this has much less strict regulations than full european type approval.

This is also the reason why brands like TVR, Noble, etc. are hard to come by in the rest of europe as they do not meet the EU regulations.

For instance they are pretty much impossble to get in Germany.

I think that's a slight overstatement Arno. Granted compared to a car with a de catted Tubi it is tame but even a standard 360 at full chat sounds nice and agressive.

I think I would have to stretch to the extra £30K and go for the CS though. That is an awesome sounding 'stock' car.

CS is too loud I thought. Ferrari were having a rethink last I heard as they were getting thrown out of UK track days for noise rather frequently.

The Yota engined Elises sounds better stock than the k cars. I think a lot of people won't bother upgrading them.

Personally I've not heard many 4 pots that sounds good. I like the Scubi's noise, although its too loud with some of the pipes people put on. Other than that, not much sounds good.

The 360 and S2 elise have got a valve that opens in the exhaust when nailing it to give a more sporty noise, so the cars can still pass the drive by noise regulations.

Thought that was on the Vanquish???

Can't see Lotus being arsed with all the fuss and it adds weight

'tis true. If you ever sit behind one in traffic, there's nuffink coming out of the right hand pipe. It opens up for low back pressure at high rpm - better max power (& nice noise) and still passes drive by noise regs.

I thought it was only on the 111S variant.

Yup. Only 111(S) has the 'flap' which opens over 4000rpm with a certain throttle percentage.

Not sure if the Yota-Lise does/has something similar in it's exchaust or not.

Bye, Arno.
