Need some new front brake bads.

Where is the best place to get this done, what are the best pads to go for? Should I just go to a Lotus dealer or is there any reason why I Should go elsewhere?

Thanks...

a specialist is cheaper if you are not fitting them yourself - like www.sinclairebodyshop.co.uk - about 1/2 the hourly rate of a dealer. Id swap all the pads for Pagid RS4-2s and be done with it

Thanks, so no advantage in using Lotus?

Know anywhere worth using in Bournemouth (or near?)? Thanks!

nope - you could buy some pads off the web and take it Kwik-Fit and they would do just as good a job !...they will charge about £25 - a dealer will be about £90 ...when you watch someone do it you wonder why you didnt do it yourself

Promise those are the last questions!

IIRC . . .

Standard Elise pads are Brembos . . .

Standard Exige pads are Pagid RS4-2's . . .

Lotus 'Motorsport' pads are Pagid RS14's . . .

Your options . .

I wouldn't buy pads from Lotus . . . waste of money . . .

A good budget pad is the EBC Greenstuff, ideal on road, do work on track but wear quickly . . . fine for mainly road use . . . better than the standard brembos tho . . .

Pagid RS4-2 are a superb road and track pad, last longer, lovely bite . . .

Pagid RS14 are my current fave, stunning bite but you have to be carefull as they are very grippy . . . can squeal a bit if not 'used appropriately' (thrashed !)

As mentioned . . . all available on LotusEcosse and at other Elise specialists . . .

Bogie, no offence here as I know you are quite the man about town, but I would rather chew my own leg off than take anything more valuabe than a Matchbox car near a Kwik-Fit. They recently put an exhuast on my bus, sure enough, 2 hours later, rattle rattle bang bang. Back we go. "oh yeah, they always do that when they are new, its just the exhaust settling into the mounts"
Bollocks, think I so take it to a garage just round the corner, who luckily had the correct mounting bracket in stock to stop the banging.

They are fing numpty's who have real difficlulty telling one end of a wrench from another. The mere thought of taking a non-euro box to them is just plain frightning.

Just went there and they will only fit pads they supply.

I really wanna get my own (some decent ones) and get someone to fit it. Anyone recommend any garages around Bournemouth?

Westover Sportscars are now in Bournemouth who are Official Lotus. Haydon (as was) in Salisbury are no longer franchised. They are both good outfits (I go to Westover) but incidentally, my B service is being done at Westover in 2 weeks and they were cheaper for this than Haydon, so I'm not sure if Haydon will be all that cheap.

Matt if you fancy a drive down the coast, call Fibreglass Services in Arundel. Miles will do it for you, he's a Lotus legend and charges very reasonably.

Skinner - i agree under normal circumstances...I guess it depends on which branch - there are 1000's ...and whether you watch them. I have to get my tyres fitted there (maintenance contract) so know the guys real well (5 visits per year!) and always watch them and have a chat whilst they work on my car

Funnily enough, I recalled this topic, as my S2 111S went to Westover for it's first 'B' service. This came in at £374, with a new wiper blade, which I was quite happy with.

Incidentally - superb service. Got a call the day before, we've sold our 111R demo you were going to drive. Would the new Exige be OK? Would it! So I had a whole day, from 0930 to 1730 with the Exige. Very much obliged to them. I know where I'll be going come replacement time.

Anyway, back to the thread. They said I needed new rear brake pads. £92.50 for the pads! This may even have been plus VAT, I can't recall due to the shock. They said I had "a couple of thousand" left in mine, so I said leave it, I'd sort it out. So, a call to Sinclaires stated circa £80 all in. And a call to Thames Valley Lotus came in around the ton.

It seems strange to me. I'm happy to take my car to a franchised dealer. I know I'll pay a bit more than some very capable specialists, but it's good to look at the latest cars, and get a feel for things. But I'm not daft nor rich, so I'm not going to pay circa £100 for brake pads. If Lotus were perhaps a little less greedy on their parts markup, I'd have had them do the work. They haven't got to match the likes of Sinclaires, just be sufficiently cheap enough for it not to be worth the hassle to the average punter lke me to go to the hassle of using them.

totally agree with Fergus D's post.

Greenstuff are fine - fit 'em yourself FFS.

The most common mistake is fitting the anti-rattle springs upside down - just remove things in the order / position they are on there and refit in reverse. It's pretty straightforward.

cheers

xxplod - Let me get this right. When you put your elise in for a service, you got an exige to drive for the day??
Bloody hell, thats the last time I use my nearest lotus dealer (William's) in Bristol. All i ever get as a courtesy car is a Skoda Octavia estate!!

Steevo - quite correct. Their new Exige demonstrator, 800 miles on the clock. Mine for the whole day, drove off at 0930, brought it back at 1730. Westover are very good. The sales staff are genuine enthusiasts, and they they look after their customers well. To be fair, they know I've bought 3 new Elises in the last 5 years and mine is coming up to 2 yeras old.
