Ive had a few problems with my gear change since oi bought el'beast few months ago. After reading few a few posts on the geary's linkage and shortshift kits i thought id give it ago. Fitted the kit and had to stand off the gearstick slightly but much improved. The proble still remains a very awkward 2nd and 5th gear change! While i was underneath the car....i trtied the gear selector that slides into the gearbox and this did appear quite notchy. Any ideas?

Tobe honest, I'd take it off. I've driven cars with these "quick-shift" things fitted to them and they are always more trouble than they are worth. The K series box is not that bad.

Interesting this one - several ppl on here think they're great. I think drag once posted that it was the best mod he's had done.

I'm sure someone with far more mechanical knowledge than I will be able to point you in the right direction.

the quickshift is great...the linkage kit (which I dont have) does require adjusting properly to work properly...I tried a car with the linkage kit and it felt a little too stiff to me so just stayed with the quickshift on its own

If both 2nd *and* 5th are a problem then I'd look at a few areas (although 2nd gear can always be a little difficult on the PG-1):

- Rod length adjusted properly?

- Everything lubed up properly? (rod ends, bellhousing pivot) Don't skimp on the moly grease! Slap it on nice and thick..

- Is the bracket that holds the gear cables attached to the gearbox housing on your car fixed in place with bolts and steel washers or does yours have rubber 'washers'? The rubber ones allow too much play in the cable itself and reduce the amount of movement on the linkage mechanism (after a while they also dis-integrate and you lose 1/2 and 5/R completely..)

- No 'play' on the cable ends and attachments? Both the gear-lever side as well as the linkage side.

Setting this up is not a difficult job, but it can be time-consuming as you need to get it 'just right'. This can involve adjusting the rod length 1 turn (or 1/2 turn) at a time to fine-tune it.

I use a B&M short shifter on my car and geary's linkage kit and it's brilliant. Absolutely no 'slop' in the gearshift and very positive 'click' shifting.

Bye, Arno.

im not an expert on these thing but in a standard gearbox in sure 2nd and 5th are on the same lay shaft.

a friend had this problem, granted on a totaly different car but within a few weeks/months his gear box was donald ducked.

might be worth a trip to a garage.

but im not 100% on this!

I have a fair number of mods:

ITG induction kit
Full exhaust system (sans CAT)
LSS
4-2-1 manifold
the linkage/short shifter
other bits and bobs

yet the linkage/shifter is the best.

If any of you are unsure, you are more than welcome to take El 'Beast for a spin (at a meet) and decide for yourselves.

It needs to be fitted properly though and given time to bed in

Right, now el Gold n Black Beast is heading to Sinclaires this weekend for a geo check, and I'm considering asking if they can do this quickshift malarky while its in.

Can someone pls tell me:
a) What the two items actually do
b) If only the quickshift is fitted how will it improve the gearshift
c) Roughly how much to supply and fit

Reason being, I'm getting pissed off (but only a teeny weeny bit actually) with the (relatively) long throw from 2 to 3 and 4 to 5. If it solves that and improves shift-speed I may well stump up the cashola.

Cheers, Tim

P.S. Arno you da man!

The quick-shift changes the gear lever for a shorter one (actually it changes the ratio of the gear lever above and below the pivot ball so you don't have to move the lever as far)

The linkage kit replaces several parts at the back end/gearbox side of the car to reduce the 'play' in the system. Especially the rubber bushes that connect the cables to the gearbox are quite 'mushy' and these are replaced by nylon versions (aka. no 'mush' at all..)

If the linkage is in good shape then it should already sharpen up the gearshift a lot.

You will need to get used to the fact that shifting now requires a little more strength because the lever you now operate is smaller than before.

If you still feel that the feeling in the shifting is too soft of floppy then the linkage kit can help there. The linkage kit has no effect on shifting distances and such, only the short-shifter does that.

Bye, Arno.

Cheers guys, i think i'll have a look at the bushes on the bracket u guys are talkin about. Also noticed that when in 4th, u can pull the gear stick towards u a about 1cmish but when foot on clutch u can't....does that make any sense??
