I own a 97 S1 elise and I have a problem with the immobiliser, the car will not mobilise and will not start, I have had it looked at and the suggestion is that because the immobiliser fitted is not in production anymore I have to have a whole new system which is major cost. Surely there is a way to bypass the immobiliser so the car can be used.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be appreciate the help or if anyone has experienced same problem, it must be common.

Thanks.

Have you tried using the immobiliser key rather than the remote?

I'nm sure there's another way.......nope that was the old alarm system. I assume yours has the Cobra system??

Have a look in the manual for how to use the immobiliser key (the small stick thing) to reset things. It sounds like the code on your keyfob and your car has lost synchronisation.

- Could it be a battery problem (either your car or your keyfob)
- Do you have a spare set of keys?

Thanks for the comments but I dont think its the key fob. I have also tried the immob key (the stick) but that still doesn't work. Its the Cobra Immobiliser (not sure of model No) but from what I gather it has several modules around the car and its the one in the engine compartment which has gone, but as its no longer produced they say this part cannot be replaced or re coded. As all these modules talk to each other and its linked to the cars brain (the car is built around the immobiliser!) its stopping the fuel supply and something else. I was hoping I could bypass the immob so I could use the car and fit a Third Party immobiliser?

Thanks for the response any help is great.

IIRC someone on the British Cars BBS (maybe Bruce at Medreg?) had some brand new replacement Cobra 6422s for sale a couple of years ago. He might still have one. Should save you a packet.

Also try Geary at Eliseparts.com

I do have ONE left, yes. Complete and could be used to patch into your existing wiring quite easily.

I have also posted comments on the Lotus British Cars BBS where you have asked the same question.
