The short roof was introduced on MY '03 IIRC, and uses the same steel cable tensioner on the back edge as it does on the header rail. I suppose it's slightly quicker to put on, and maybe a bit tighter/quieter. I've got a long roof ('01) and I also prefer the way it looks.

Short roof is quicker - it stays attached to the side rails, just unlock 'em and roll it up. Similar to the VX220 roof. The separate support bar thingies run front to to rear instead of side to side.

can anyone post some pics of the roof up from inside so ican see how its possitioned etc. on a few of the pics ive seen the real roleover bar sort of thing has 2 grooves in it running front to back what are these? they look a bit unsightly when the roof is off? are these a result of the long or short roof?

I think you're describing the sockets for the tension bars... if you are, that is a long roof. The short roof has little sockets in the front face of the hoop, similar to those in the header rail. I guess a little neater, but hardly that noticeable.
