Hi Guys (and girls) A word of advice if I may:

Have become increasingly aware of the problems associated with the little old elise's gear change & I know the 'sloppiness' described by many owners can be aleviated with the linkage kit. The problem I notice in particular is the difficulty engaging 2nd and 5th with any kind of swiftness without having to endure a loud crunch.

When attempting a swift take off from traffic lights or similar, it is necessary when changing up into 2nd to depress the clutch and hold the gear lever firmly against the 2nd gear gate where it will drop in after an annoying three quarter of a second wait.

Is this problem one which is typical of the sloppy/notchy gear change and as such can be rectified with the linkage kit, or is it symptomatic of a more complex/expensive problem!!!???

Please - not the latter!!!

Wait until it gets stuck in reverse and you put in first and let the clutch out and it goes backwards.

Not fixed it yet Speacalised PW at Reading have the answer to put some different linkage in, I'll find out the details, cost quoted around £100 + Vat.

I had problems getting it into gear at all - turned out the clutch slave cylinder had failed (after 20k miles!) so the only way to drive it to the garage was turn it off, put it in first, start kangarooing down road and stay in first hoping not to stop...

Needless to say that sounded far too traumatic/dangerous so it was recovery truck time - £300, thank god it was under warranty and all paid for

Errrr, that sounds like it does fall into the 'latter' category of more expensive things!

I've got a 1998 S1 (with 70k on the clock) - any ideas if this has any well known gear box probs?

Doesn't sound right, with any luck its just a warn linkage (that may require replacement at this level of crapness). They do degrade over time unfortunately.

captain beakys sounds like ared hose or a badly bled clutch circuit.

Do a really good pressure bleed and this will probably help - the linkage does make the change more direct - but yours sounds like a clutch issue IMHO
