Scorching marks in the distributor cap

I have a 99 S1 with a K series which seems to have an appetite for dizzy caps. I am getting some serious scorching at the contact points. The pictures below are from one I just changed after 5000 miles. The previous one showed the same scorching and had become so bad there was a misfire. Spark plugs where also recently changed so they are not the cause.

Any suggestions where I should be looking? Thanks.
