Stalling, no, revving, no, stalling!!! Help!!

Hi all,
Got a 160 (2000 'W') which started stalling last week, otherwise running fine. The local garage who do a good trade in tractor repairs couldn't find any fault, and the stalling had disappeared. But when delivering the car back, it started idling around 2k, then briefly dipping to about 1k, and cycling between the two idle speeds. And then it stalled a couple of times.

The garage has left it with me on the basis that this is more baffling than the faults commonly encountered on a Massey Fergusen.

What's the problem?? Any bright ideas??

I have a 160 sport and i thought this was a problem but its not!!!

160 sport should idel around 1200 when at full operating temp.

mine also struggles in the cold might also find throttle body sticks too.

can be changed at a cost vineir pulleys and an emerald ecu.

I've had it a year after having had the standard S1, and have got used to the 1200 idle, but this is something very different - idling at 2k, then at 1k and back up to 2k all in the space of 10 seconds. And when the engine is warm.

This happened earlier to my S2 111s, engine warm and lasted for about 1 hour. Went to B&C, they checked it out and found nothing.

Never happened again since, been to Le Mans & back & covered over 3k miles since with no problem. Mystery....

My S2 (118bhp) very occasionally does the variable idling trick. In my case, turning off the engine and then restarting always sorts it out. Makes me think it's the ECU.

On the S160 I thought that was a feature

Yep - feature definately....

Mine stalls when its cold and wet, at about 67 degrees.

I think the throttle body sticks, or maybe the IACV is slow gets stuck.

When it gets to running temp though - never been a problem.

You should change the throttle body Tom Burnley (Trophy 160) - not only does it cure the sticking problem, but also gives more power. I also replaced the original air intake with a high flow Hurricane kit. That's made a huge difference to low rev torque.

Yep, been thinking very seriously about increasing the breathing on mine - oh yes.

It was the first thing the dealer said during the sale.....
