Every time i turn my lights on the main beam flickers,
especially when i indicate. Is this a common problem? and is a replacement stalk required? And is it the same pattern as the vauxhall unit? how do i remove the stalk as the top cowling does not seem to want to remove very easily? Please help as night driving has become impossible as i found out on sunday!
Many thanks the MUTT...

get a new one from your friendly vauxhall dealer.

To remove the binacle there's three screws underneath and two on the side IIRC then the stalk screws on - I think.

yep - vauxhall part - about £10 from a breakers yard

Just undo the bottom of the binacle and the top pulls out from under the stack.

Then the whole unit unclips very simply from the steering column / switch gear.

Mine just started doing the same last week!

Time to fork out for the brushed aluminium Elistparts.com stalks (been putting it off for ages)!

Anyone fitted these? How easy are they to get on?

Mark,

I have done some research into this and apparently they are very simple to fit, just depends whether you are brave enough. You have to cut the old stalks off at the base and then attach the aluminium ones, with grub screws, generally although I have heard people talk about gluing them on.

I have to say this put me off fitting them as the only reason I was going to fit them was that they appeared more robust than the plastic ones. However if they are basically attached to the plastic ones anyway, I reckon they are just as likely to snap off give the right, accidental, kick when you get in or out.

Good luck. If you get them let me know how you get on fitting them, I may be tempted yet.

There's no risk of them breaking off, they're not that weak, neither are the original plastic ones!

I don't know if it's the same on an S1, but on the S2 you have to remove the bottom and side screws as mentioned to remove the lower cowl and the two silver torx screws at the base of the instruments to remove the top cowl. It's a pig to refit, cos it's so flexible (light-weight, see?) and can wriggle around.

The stalk/switch unclips from a holder, each side is independent of the other.

As for fitting the alloy stalks, I fitted some to my old TVR (Vauxhall stalks again) and they fitted snug with a grub screw, my Elise has the Lotus Sport ones and they have a round socket over the square stalk, so the grub screw is apparently not strong enough, hence they recommend glue - I used Araldite.

The one thing to watch is that the new stalks often foul the apertures in the cowl once refitted - I couldn't indicate left or use full beam at all! The instructions mention "fettling" the cowl - that'd be taking your stanley knife to the holes then! I had to take quite a bit off the indicator side, so be careful with this.
