2001 Y or 51 plate with low miles (sub 30k) and Sports Tourer pack Privately should fall around your budget or just under

you could do even better than than.Maybe a 2001 car with 10/15k. A ST sports tourer or race tech. both pretty much the same car with the 1.8 but with different trim/spec levels.

You wouldnt be able to get the 111s 1.8 VVC as these command 3/4 grand more.

so i would be looking at a standard engine , what power are these ?
what are the trim difference's , sports tourer , race tech , standard ?
would like carpets and alcantara trim .

drive cooper s at moment but getting annoyed by interior squeeks and buzzes etc would an elise be any better , doesn't seem much in them to rattle.

had a 911 and elan before don't think i'm asking to much for it to be well put together.

The standard engine is 120bhp. Doesn't sound a lot but the car is light so it works out at 160 odd bhp per ton. A bit better than your Mini.

Race Tech and Sports Tourer are basically option packs.

Race Tech is more basic. You get drilled brake discs, front driving lamps, alcantara seats, chequer plate floor, front mud flaps.

Sports Tourer is the one with more toys. Leather, carpets, 4 speaker stereo etc.

Note that there was still a lot of flexibility for mixing and matching specs. Mine's a Race Tech but has 4 speaker stereo for example.

As far as rattles and squeaks go my caar has none (click on my profile to see why!) but you should expect some and to be honest I wouldn't expect an Elise to be as well built as a new Mini or a 911. Should give an Elan a run for its money though!

Now is a good time to but as the weather is cold and the nights dark. You should be able to get an early 01 car for about £15k. For this money you'll be getting 25k miles with FSH and probaly a couple of owners. Sports Tourers are supposed to be a bit more desirable than Race Techs.

The elise is not for you. Best to get this out of the way straight away.

It is primarily about the driving experience. Owners care very little about bangs, squeaks and knocks as this is what you come to expect about the the elise.

If your into DIY removing your seats and 'dynamating' the interior and siliconing gaps here and there then welcome aboard. Its not a 'plug and play' car. Its not mass production and you can tell from what you get but its abilities on road offset all of this.

In my opionion ...your barking up the wrong tree...get a boxster.

Hope that helps.

If its any guide, I sold a Y plate sports tourer for 16k before the end of summer where the prices then slumped further. I could have maybe got 16.2k for it but ran out of time due to vacation.

16.2k was the resistance point for interest back then (end of august). It will have slidden a fair bit more by now. Dealer offered me 15.3k for it FWIW.

edit : oops got the prices all wrong by a grand!

i understand what you are saying but i do expect a certain level of build quality on a £16 k car.

Steve,

Build quality isn't bad but if it was on the Ford or Vauxhall line it would probably be sent back 2 or 3 times. Best thing is to go and have a look at one and see what you think. Not sure about general build quality on the s2 but the s1 is at kit car level.

I had an S2000 in between 2 elises (at around the same price - 16k) and the build quality was outstanding. You got so much more car for your money..it was unbelievable - Air con...5 second hood..padded sports seats..xenons...250bhp...etc. you could tell it had been QC'ed to the last finish.

But....

an S2000 doesn't drive like an elise.

as a guide i got 16k for my 2 and a half year old s2
it was july 02 model (16,000 miles), the main benefit is that it has the short roof which is easier and quicker to remove.
my car had no extras though, just radio.

i think you should expect buzzes, rattles and squeaks from this car. even my brand new car had an annoyying buzz
