Hi guys, i have a bit of a problem and thought you were the people in the know. I have a rover k series engine (2Litre). I was wondering where the thermostat should be. See its a friends car and i had a quick look at it as he reported its been smelling hot. I saw the thermostat has been bodged into the top hose and held in place by 2 jubilee clips. This cant be right, can it?
My thoughts were its supposed to be in the back of the water pump in a cast housing, not a rubber pipe.
Your thoughts please.

Pictures?

But yes, it can't be on ANY top hose.
Std is below the rightmost intake, in a black plastic housing bolted to the back of the water pump.
Remote is on the coolant-to-radiator hose on the right of the car, at the bottom, entering the inside right aluminum rail through a hole. Close to the oil filter let's say.

If the engine smells like burnt it could be bad news...
