PTP 165 Kit - time to get it done!
Discussion
Hi Chaps
Well after nearly a year of decision making I think I’m gonna get the PTP 165 kit for my S1. I have been speaking to Simon at PTP who has spend much time going through the whole procedure, talking about the products, workshop facilities etc….
But I have just come across some old threads about this kit and approx 50% of the comments have been negative. There have been people with hot starting problems, this has affected a few people, and then there was a person who had drivability problems which were only resolved by fitting multi throttle bodies!
I’m not willing to spend £2.5k for a kit which is gonna make my car like a bag of hammers, but costing up the options from DVA he is more expensive as you have to factor in rolling road time to get the very best from the car. I have heard really good things about Dave and to be honest after writing this I feel like I’m back to square one, either PTP or DVA!
If I was to go with DVA I think that the K13 kit is the way to go but also add the emerald for added reliability – anyone out there gone down this route?
Cheers for any help.

Hi Paul
I am in exactly the same dilema. I have also spoken to Simon at PTP and he seems to know an awful lot about these upgrades. I ahev also seem negative comments about it but I have also seen some good ones. It seems that DVA come highly recommended. I did read that people who use DVA do like to get their hands dirty themselves, unfortunately I like to keep mine clean if possible which is what is swaying me more towards PTP. I have had a quote form them for the PTP165 kit fitted @ £3112.00 all in. Have you been quoted the same? If you check on the S1 Engine upgrade link on the forum I have had some replies to the same question you have asked. Keep me informed if you hear anything new and I will do the same. I had planned to call Simon today and book it in. Maybe we should have them done at the same time and then we could compare the cars afterwards. Cheers Paul
Regards
Steve

Hi stevokenevo
The price I was quoted for the work was £2481.61 Inc VAT
How cheap I hear you say?
Well I have decided that there are a few things that I can leave out of the kit. I already have a hurricane induction kit so that saves the £299+VAT from the ITG kit. I also have a cat bypass pipe, so the saving here is £237.99+VAT.
Fitting was quoted at £350+VAT and that includes new oil, filter and cam belt. I decided to take the janspeed exhaust as Simon said that my existing exhaust (a Chris Neil system) might have different back pressure and upset the system hence not making the 165 Mark.
This kit represents good value for money if all you want to do is take the complete package and get either PTP or your local lotus dealer to fit it. The problems arise when you start to change the set-up. So with me not wanting the ITG this might upset the ECU and it might run like a bag of hammers. Also Simon said that I would have to replace the 52mm Throttle body back to a 48mm TB as the ECU is programmed to run only with the 48mm airflow.
So like I said above, I'm back to square one! so I have decided to drop Dave at DVA Power an email and asked for a quotation on a similar package. I have roughly costed it out myself and the cost is approx £3250. This is basically a K13 kit with an emerald ECU added. Other costs include adding an EBD 4-2-1 manifold to the system £412 inc VAT (fit myself), piper verniers to time the cams to perfection, £200 inc VAT and budgeted £235 for a half day tuning at emerald. Simon said adding a janspeed manifold to the PTP would also be problematic.
After all this I am no further forward. What I do know however is that DVA have an excellent reputation, so do PTP but I think they trade a lot off their reputation and links with lotus' engine development. Don't mind getting my hands dirty either!

Bruce - I was talking about the saving I would make if i didn't take the sports cat. After reading, it does sound a little daft.
now that you have joned the debate have you had any experience with DVA's work?
I know plenty of people here who wouldn't go anywhere else, but you seem to frquent this forum often and your well respected in the community too.
Cheers

I have just sorted my 165 kit and it now works fine ( See my note on the forum). I also had the same problem, I think that both PTP and DVA have strengths and weaknesses, to keep your sanity you have to take one option and stick with it. I didn't think the guy at PTP was helpful when my car was playing up, but Phil at the South West Lotus Centre was as determined as I was to sort it out. Best of luck and enjoy the extra power, it makes a difference.
