mines always done it a bit - recently its started making an interesting clunk on the reverse and throw into 5th - soudns like somethings come off somewhere - am waiting to se if entire transmission will fall otu as that'd be quite funny!

not sure it's a problem...is tehre any mechanical issue too? (more effort eneded, crunching etc..)

Best wild guess... idler gear knackered? This happened in one of my old mini's when changing from 1st to 2nd and that was the problem.

Honestly, no idea other than that.

Does it engage or do you have to force it? Does it "pop" out of gear at all?

its engages just nicely and doesnt pop out but this has worsen over the last few thousande miles. When i hear other people changing gear into reverse and making that clunking noise i always say "ouch" or "silly cow"...

So it clunks when you engage the clutch and pull away, or when you work the linkage?

Not saying it is the problem, but the gear change on my S1 went very strange.

Clunking followed by and getting stuck in reverse or 5th.

The problem was the clip that secures one of the cables to the gearbox near the linkage fell off. 32p and all in now well.

Worth a look.

TADTS? I'm sure I read about this on one of the Elise forums when I first got mine 3 years ago.

Mine has always done it in reverse (from new) but only very occasionally. It feels as though there is not enough movement in the linkage to get it all the way into gear. The physical difference between "CLUNK" and into gear is only a few millimetres at the gear lever.

If you feel resistance as you begin to engage (as with all gearboxes I've ever driven), don't try to ram it home.

Stick it in neutral, re-engage the clutch a couple of times and then try again.

Granted I've had the odd graunch in the Elise and other cars - usually when the clutch is not engaged completely I guess.
