First things first, last week I finally bought an Elise, it’s a 1998 azure blue S1. I still remember the day seven years ago when I saw my first Elise ‘in the flesh’ I knew then I had to have one! It has been a long time coming but it is certainly worth the wait, it’s everything I hoped it would be and more, I've certainly got now regrets!!!

Over the past few months I have read a lot of the posts on this forum and it’s been an invaluable source of information. I’m hoping now someone will be able to help me out. The car I bought has a de-cat pipe fitted (which I knew about when I bought the car). The previous owner didn’t have the catalytic converter he just took it to a garage which would fit one and then remove it again (apparently) to get it through the MOT. I believe this isn’t too out of the ordinary but I was wondering whether it would be worth me buying a cat, Eliseparts sell one for about £250 but I was wondering about getting one second hand. I know there are used ones knocking about, would one of these be worth getting and if so how much should I expect to pay? (My MOT isn’t due till October so there’s no real urgency to get one).

Oh yeah, one last thing, Is there much noticeable difference (performance and sound) between having the cat fitted and not?

Hope someone can help, thanks.

Look on ebay too - I think there was a 2nd hand sports cat on there. You might also want to check out the online Elise specialists www.eliseshop.com, www.hangar111.com and www.eliseparts.com. Eliseparts sometimes carry used bits so would be a good place to start.

Yes, lots louder with a CRP

Nice colour choice BTW

Hi Ian and welcome to the club,

I found myself in an identical situation this year having bought my Liz with a CRP and no CAT.

You can expect your friendly specialist garage to chuck an extra £50 on your MOT to temporarily fit a CAT for your MOT.

This was a problem for me on two counts. Firstly, I would have needed to go to a specialist for my MOT and secondly, I'm tight and didn't fancy an extra £50 up my shirt each year.

I popped a request on seloc and had 3 or 4 guys who offered to help. Going rate seems to be about £50, sometimes less when they come up on e-bay.

Fairly simple to fit. Back car onto ramps, remove diffuser, spray all cat bolts with WD40, go for a cuppa, undo bolts (decent socket and extension bar required) and remove CRP and replace with CAT. I used the elise parts stainless fitting kit to ease subsiquent removal. Pretty simple really.

Oh and yes, CRPs make big big difference to exhaust note - wouldn't be without it myself!

Hope it helps

Thanks for all the info, it's a big help, will keep an eye out for a second hand CAT for the MOT but in the meantime stick with the CRP (and the noise).

Have you signed up to MLOC yet? (type mloc in to google)

Cheers Dunc, I'm not far from the centre of Leicester.

I have looked on MLOC several times when searching for an Elise but not yet signed up, I will do soon though (especially as I now actually have the car).

Can't miss me if I'm in the Liz. Chrome Orange, black wheels, sports Zorst and CRP!

Just can't wait till the longer, warmer evenings!

Have fun buddy

Have a look on MLOC (www.mloc.net).

A significant number of East Midlanders take their cars over to Horizon (www.horizonmotorsport.co.uk/index.html) in spite of being the other sidee of Birmingham. They have the "communal" Cat there (Actually belongs to Scott_Mac) and the idea is you turn up for your MoT with CRP in place, they swap CRP for communal cat, MoT car then swap it back!
