What is Castor?
Discussion
Castor action is the ability of the wheel to follow its piont of 'swivel'. Simply its the same as taking your hands off the handlebars of a push-bike. as long as you are going forward the wheel follows and self centres and this is what would pull the car back to a straight line after cornering and would hold it stable at speed and not wandering from side to side. Shopping trolleys are 'supposed' to have it as well!!!
Its not that big a deal if they can't set it perfectly on an Elise if thats what is worrying you. As above it affects the self centering feel which people tend to have a preference about, but its a real pain to adjust on a liz so as long as both sides match I wouldn't really bother getting it adjusted unless you really don't like the car's feel.
Caster angle is the angle between the lower ball joint and the upper ball joint looked at form the side of the car.
The line drawn through these two points to the floor is where you can measure caster trail/lead from the centre of the wheel contact patch.
As mentioned, Caster is used to self centre the wheels.
It is caster angle that is used to angle the wheel to road surface as lock is applied, think of a 2CV and the angle of the wheels to road surface on full lock.
Very important part of steering geometry set up......

LOL - I think on trolleys what is being reffered to is that the type of wheel/joint is called a Caster, not the same as the suspension geometry caster

Urr not, it is because they have a caster angle. The angle I spoke about is the angle from the top joint to the wheel spindle axis. It enable the wheels to give a little straight line control, like wise on a bicylce.
Caster wheel, has caster trail and the bicycle has caster lead.......
castor or caster explained
http://july.fixedreference.org/en/20040724/wikipedia/Castor_angle
basically the angle of the kingpin/steering axis from vertical in a front/rear plane
it IS almost the same thing as in a shopping trolley caster/or

But Casters is a noun in this case "The trolley is on Casters" which is not the same for the geometry usage
