Induction Induction Induction?
Discussion
Also posted on SELOC, To the wise and experienced.
Had the standard S1 from new now 88,000 miles.
Thinking of a Janspeed SS exhaust but to get the most out of the exhaust do I:
1) Just use the standard air filter box with a Pipercross sponge
2) K & N onto Throttle body
3) Piper Cross Viper
4) Hurricane
5) ITG (bit too pricey though)
6) Leave the damn thing alone
7) S2 airbox with panel filter (reply from SELOC)
All comments welcome.
Cheers

Gary, I had a Janspeed (Lotus Sports factory fit) mild steel can on mine when I bought it. Was very boomy but great note if you don't mind that. Towards the end of its life it became intolerable.
I now have a Bell & Colville SS can and Hurricane induction and am very, very pleased with the setup.
ITG was nice but I couldn't justify the cost vs. benefits. The exhaust note is very nice and with the Huzza sounds brilliant above 3k. Performance-wise you may get a few more ponies and some more torque, hard to prove how much without a rolling road I guess but suggestions I've seen note about 5-8bhp for the can and 3-5 for the induction perhaps. With a sports cat I believe you should see a return around the 130bhp mark on a standard k-series.
What I have noticed since I fitted the Huzza is better throttle response, particularly at motorway speeds. I also find that in fact the noise in the cabin is less invasive with the Huzza at motorway cruising speeds than it was with the std airbox.
Happy shopping!

...but a Hurricane/ITG is a sealed unit so will not suck in hot air like an uncovered K&N. If it's not covered and sucks in hot air then you're defeating the point of it and impeding performance.
Debateable how much added performance you will get though Tim. I only bought the K&N for the sound effects and not for any BHP increase because I dont think you get that much with any of them.

NOt beating you up here Tim but IRTA you can expect gains of 8-13bhp with a "sports" back box and an induction kit
It might feel/sound faster but I doubt it'll give any real-world benefits - a sports cat allows the exhaust gases to flow through it better which would give a bit more power.
All this sealed induction kit stuff is great but if you driving along at 40mph, the air going in to the side of the car and through the filter is unlikely to have time to get much, if any, warmer than the air outside the car, the casing of the induction kits will get hot over time and that will warm the air up anyway.
For the sound add a K&N. All IMHO you understand
Edit for smelling pistakes

I know it does not sound as fancy as all the others but have you considered what i have done and is quite a cheap option.
I got a K&N filter and went to merlin motorsports in castle combe and got a length of aluminium tube then put the filter on the end of the tube moving the air filter away from the engine and now sits by the vent. £20 for the aluminium tube.
sorry for the quality

NO beaten taken mate - as you'll note, I'm not making promises or assertions, just reiterating what I've read in various places here and on SELOC. bogie noted something not too dissimilar a while back when I had mine fitted...

..have fun...they do make a difference, and sound great...with exhaust/induction/sports cat you probably get 10-12bhp which is useful. When I had my old ITG fitted and then dynoed the car, I had got another 4bhp, but it smoothed out/lifted the curves in places which was better.

Gotta take issue with you there mate - if it's pointless why develop and sell it? The design of the kit, end to end, trapping the airflow almost completely as it comes in the side intake, then channelling it specifically to the airbox and throttle body has to be better than sticking a bloody-great bucket of a thing in the middle of a very hot engine bay sucking in hot air.
Would be interesting to see some facts though to see if we could back up either side of the discussion. Anyone got read-outs from rolling road sessions with K&N vs. sealed units? But then even those wouldn't show real-world performance unless you had a fan blowing cool air towards the intakes in the side of the car to simulate normal airflow at speed would they?
If you just want it to be more noisy then a regular K&N set-up will be fine I suppose but I think Ju.'s suggestion makes more sense and is a smarter idea for a little effort and less £.
I pondered the same thing for a while myself and in the end went for...
Janspeed SS exhaust
C.R.P (gotta change at MOT time!)
Hurricane
Can't recommend the comination enough. Originally had a K&N but changed that when the performance seemed to DROP!
Now fairly loud, but its my everyday drive too including several long motorway runs and I love it!

SO far taking in consideration the comments so far I have:
1) Hurricane
2) Piper Cross Viper
3) S2 Airbox with sponge
Cost would be S2 airbox with sponge followed by Hurricane then Pipercross.
Time to think.
Thankyou all for your comments. I will keep you posted with the result after I have been to Janspeed on the Rolling road.

i have an ITG......it looks great, car sounds miles better, some performance improvements, picks up more smoothly. will hopefully be on a rolling road in may.
Cant speak for the others, but the ITG has a tricky three part foam filter for maximum filtration and minimum 'choking'. it was more renty then the others, but i did get a top deal!!
