Due to stupidty (forgetting the camera was there despite going past it most days) I got a fine and 3 points. Was doing 36 in a 30 zone - one of those cameras not placed for safety but placed 100 yards before it opens into a dual carriage way to catch people who go a bit too early and make a few quid!!

Going to restrain myself from going on a rant about cameras and government policy but just need to know what effect it will have on my insurance? Are we talking less than £100? Has evryone declared their points? Are some companies more understanding than others?

Unlike the government, insurance companies are commercial organisations competing with each other for your business. As almost everyone I know has 3 points these days, and insurance companies realise that in cases such as yours it hardly means that you are more likely to be involved in an accident, I doubt it will affect the premium much at all. Do make sure you declare it, though.

Let me do the rant for you: a friend was recently caught by a mobile camera for allegedly doing 59 in a 50 zone - that's on a dual carriageway, with no roadworks or other special measures (A1 North, just before Sandy, Beds). At this rate, 3 points is going to become the norm. Meanwhile, boy racers continue to tear through the villages round here at 50+

Do yourself a favour - get an Origin b2.

It will allow you to keep your eyes on the road rather than on the speedo and kerbside watching for scameras. Particularly useful in unfamiliar areas where you can fall victim to a dubiously-placed "safety" camera.

Sorry if that sounded like an advert, but I bought one after getting pinged for 35 in a 30 last year in my MGB, and having to go on a frankly useless and patronising "speed awareness course" to avoid the points.

efect on insurnace can vary.
some companies will ignore
others will load on 50-80 quid a year extra (possibly for 5 years)

try getting a quote online both with and without your points

i did have 2 lots of 3 point on my license, but its clean now

Yep, same in our town - boy racers nailing their neon cars through the town past all of the pedestrians / pushchairs etc... I have NEVER come across any police prescience outside of my daughters school even though people are always driving way too fast... The Police are always on the local A47 dual at non-busy times of day making some £££'s...

Couldnt agree more guys and I was furious at 1st but calmed down over the last 9 months when I realised there was no point challenging the police. Couldnt care less about the fine but having points on my licence suggesting I'm a dangerous driver really pis*es me off. Cameras are just lazy policing and dont catch the people driving dangerously/without tax/no insurance.

Going to get a quote from my current insurer (Elephant) without the points then declare them and see how much it goes up.

Cheers all

Just one point - I spoke to sales at Elephant the other day and was told they do add more than other insurers for points. The cheapest quote I obtained (I have SP30's) was from Norwich Union Direct.

In my S1 Elise a few years ago I got snapped by a camera van going both to and from the local chippy, within 6 minutes of each other! Expensive bag of chips that was!

As for the effect on insurance I think you'll find it's nominal if anything at all. They're more bothered about if you've been banned from driving, been caught driving without insurance, etc. After spending 3 hours on Friday getting quotes I found the best one for me was First Alternative, who don't require a Tracker and will replace old for new within the first year if it's stolen or written off.

just a question on this subject, but how do things stand about trying to get away with not paying or owning up to these things? I ve heard so many rumours about ways to avoid them but does anybody have and hard and proven methods that they would like to suggest, not that anyone has used them to avoid prosicution surely?

If the car is registered to a limited company (costs about £99 to set up) who fails to state who was driving at the relevant time then the company gets a fine but no points of course. Mr Blair is only interested in your money.

intresting idea, would be worth it in saved insurance premium alone. BUT would it work?

Think you'll find its the company secretary that picks up the points.

Not knowing who was driving is no excuse in the eyes of the law

Keep an eye on this site for someone fighting his speeding claim based on innacurate speed cameras.. and proof of driving...

Trust me, I know what I am talking about, the company sec does not get any points...Can you imagine what would happen at big companies and plus what do you think would happen if the company sec did not have a license. I can quote chapter and verse on the legislation if you really want me to.

The company simply gets a letter asking them to identify the driver, a failure to identify the driver means the company (not an individual) commits an offence and gets fined (normally £60 plus nominal costs). Hardly any companies attend court and simply pay the fines that are issued.

While we're on the subject... (and sorry to hijack the thread)

Just got home last night to find a "Final Warning Notice" for an offence date 17/04/2005. Apparently police records show that I "have failed to furnish information concerning the driver or person with information that will lead to the driver".

This is the first I have heard of any offence. I take it I, or whoever was driving (I can't remember, it was over a month ago, they don't even say where the offence was committed) has been zapped by camera?

Where do I stand on this? Any chance of getting off because I haven't had a ticket? Anyone else been in this position?

I was unlucky enough to get two SP50's in a year for speeding on a motorway. So come renewal time I had 6 points on my licence.

My insurance came down by about £10! I'm with Norwich Union. However, I had anticipated it coming down by about £100.

I guess it would be worth following up the PLC thing once points start to build up on your licence, as any costs would be less than the hike in insurance. does the car have to be regestered as a company car and does this bring added problems with insurance?

A friend just got done for 36 in a 30 at 0430hrs as he was on the way to the airport. We have now both bought an INFORAD, which on trips out this week warned me about all the cameras down the A14, A11 and A1. Cheap and cheerful and a bit annoying as it beeps at all cameras in both carriageways, and those within 250 meters on the roads you cross but uncannily accurate in telling you when you are over the limit for a particular camera (like 51mph). Only £80 and not being made illegal as far as I know!
