Animosity in an Elise?
Discussion
Has anyone had anyone be aggressive towards them in the Elise? My old MR2 used to get keyed every 3-4 months, in my del sol, everyone wants to race you but in the 'liz everyone is nice, I drive down through town and someone will call out "nice car".
I was driving through town late on a saturday night with the roof of. A group of about 10 lads were very drunk and decided to cross the road in front of me and I stopped to let them cross. They then stood in the road eying up me and the car. I thought I was in big trouble, if they wanted to pick the car up and take it away there was very little I could do! I slowly put her in first and got ready to zoom off and probably through them if necessary. They then surrounded the car, by which time my hand was on the hand brake and I was ready to go.
They all started to say "Nice car" and took it in turn to come round to the drivers side, reach in and shake my hand!!! I was utterly gob smacked! As they were shaking my hand they were telling the chavs in thier novas and hondas to sod off while they stopped all the traffic to admire the car!
I dont think this would happen in any other car.

Have had mixed responses.
Several kids with mobiles taking pics, best was a week ago in Brighton where some foreign lad came up to me whilst stopped outside the Odeon said it was a cool car, sounded great and asked very politely in broken English if it would be ok to take a pic... naturally I obliged, and then gave it the full beans as I pulled away with him laughing his socks off.
On the neg side I had someone yelling at me to shut up as I went down the high street in Tunbridge Wells a week or so ago - I think he was a mentalist - which made me laugh. Decided to turn round at the roundabout and scream it past him a second time, at which point he stepped out into the road and shook his fist at me... I could hardly drive I was p!ssing myself laughing so hard.
One neighbour (mechanic) thinks its brilliant and can't wait to go for a spin, another (older lady in her 60's) came out last night while I was fiddling with the throttle body and checking the belts (it was stalling yesterday), and asked if I was playing "Brands Hatch". I think she was a bit hacked off at the noise so I apologised and offered her a pax ride - her face changed from thunderous to a smile, and "...maybe not tonight but on a weekend perhaps".
It's a Classic British sportscar FFS - it should be worshipped!

One nice elise moment at the lights George Square Glasgow.
Pulled up next to a shiny brand new boxster with a preening driver. Three local ned's crossing the road stop and start eyeing up my y plate s2 with the "nice car big man" thumbs up and smiles. Porche man was livid and raced off as i laughed and pulled away with decorum.

dsepite the fact that Waspy is so chavved up all it needs is a baseball cap
(viper stripes, black arse, signwriting, front splitter, rear splitter, and large tea tray spoiler on the back, not to mention the noise
)
I only seem to get good responses most people smile or wave or the kids say 'nice car' the most common question is 'wow, how fast does that go?' Try explaining to a 12 year old its not the speed its the response.

I've had overwhelmingly positive responses in all my encounters with others whilst in the 'liz. People let me out at junctions, don't drive right up to the back in queues or tailgate on the motorways.
I've seen quite a few people taking pics of it, or asking if they can. Whilst I was in Starbucks on one occasion, I watched as a group of foreign students took it in turns to have their photos taken next to it.
I was quite cruel on one occasion, however. A small group of young-ish sports car fans wandered past my car, were somewhat smitten by it (just polished & roof off) and stopped for a closer look. I was chatting with a friend a discreet distance away. As one of them bent over to take a closer look at the front badge, I couldn't help myself from pressing the panic button on the remote keyfob, setting the alarm off. The lad had his nose practically touching the car's, and jumped a mile. In fact, I think he may have soiled himself. Too funny! Hang on... this thread was about *creating* animosity in an Elise, right?

A school bus full of sixth form netballers pulled out in front of me passing through Poole a few months ago.
The girlies on the back seat started waving. I returned the gesture only to be met with a full back window full of pert young uncovered breast pushed right up against the glass.
Quite splendid

No w that's what I call a good response!!
I've had young lads taking pics with mobiles etc but one of the best was when two young lads aged about 12/13 I guess, heard me coming up the road, turned, saw me and just applauded as I went past with huge smiles on their faces, made me chuckle for the next few minutes!

Yip.. can echo all of the above responses. Had a hen night of young ladies all dressed as red devils, literally stop my car (Ardent Red S2 111S, freshly polished) in the middle of the town centre on a Friday night, pose all over it for photos and I got a smacker on my chops from the bride-to-be!
In 5 years owning 3 Elises, I never had a single problem and my cars were all every day cars. I did c70K in those 5 years, and would leave them in multi-storeys, town centres etc... Countless shouts of nice car! Thumbs ups and petrol forecourt conversations.
I think it is becasue it is British and seen as an enthusiasts car. Whilst I suppose I'm looking forward to the Cayman 'S' we have on order (should arrive Feb 06) if I'm honest I would rather have just kept my 2002 111S.

Here in NZ (where an Elise is a VERY rare sight indeed) the thing attracts all kinds of attentions.... the number of times I've looked in my rear vision mirror in traffic to see the driver/passenger of the car behind manoeuvring for a PXT shot
I had expected a lot of "rich w*nker" comments, especially from the boyracer brigate but I've not had a SINGLE negative comment since having it... those who take notice usually do so with smiles/thumbs up/waves etc.... am most impressed.... I think I'd actually feel LESS worried about people keying/maliciously damaging the Elise than a BMW 3-series or other blandmobile sedan... it's a car that people who care about cars seem to universally respect.

... another Pistonheads "coffee, meet keyboard" moment!I've only had my car a couple of months, but am already seeing the effect it has on people! Everyone wants to take an opportunity to say 'nice car' or start talking to you about it. How wonderful!
I genuinely thought when buying the car that it would not attract that much attention - for me buying the Elise was a fabulous car, but it was a very selfish decision - I wanted something fun, fast, excellent handling that required learning, and looked a bit nice. Then, people who 'knew about cars' would 'know what it is'
However, the amount of attention it gets is, quite frankly, staggering!
Especially roof off, summer's day, freshly polished. God I'm glad I bought an Elise...
