Don't all freak out at me!!!
Discussion
Hi,
I have a standard S2 and was thinking about an exige as my next car... Since I bought my S2 over a year ago I have spent hours doing this and that to it... but I have completely become attached to the whole Elise concept/handling, hence the interest in an exige (for more track days)
Now just hear me out!!!... The other option is a TVR Tuscan... I've not driven one, but I know it's fast. I just worry that the handling won't be as sharp & true
If I'm honest (and I don't mean to lead anyone) I do want the Exige, but think it's good to properly eliminate other options!
What do you think and why?
Exige S2 (with LSS) or TVR Tuscan (with that girly paint that changes colour)?
Thanks
FH

I've driven both and they are poles appart. Mk2 Tuscan S is sooo powerful, don't understand why you need anything more than 2nd gear. It handles well but to me it was a bit of workout having to restrain 400 odd horses all the time. It drives nicely in town.
I nearly bought a Sagaris but the depreciation was massive, expected value in 3 years time was £20K which is a lot a £54K car. The Tuscan S was about the same. Add in a grand servicing bill every 6,000 miles and it becomes a very expensive car.
In the end I bought an Elise and a Ford Focus, Elise sits in the garage until the weekend and the Focus gets abused during the week. For me I had a great play thing for the weekend and practicality during the week. Plus it was a lot cheaper than the TVR.

Chalk and Cheese.
Tuscan is a hugely powerful car but wont get anywhere near an Exige in the bends.
Tuscans are becoming very cheap now but for a reason. They are probably the most unreliable TVR and many of them have had huge problems with the engines.
If you want to do more track days then its a no brainer. Exige every time. It will be a lot faster, more fun and wont cost as much to run as a Tuscan.

Funny that, i'm going to to be doing exactly the same thing, Elise for weekends and Focus for the grind! :-)
To balance the argument out a bit, while the Speed 6 is far from bulletproof the new Tuscans are much improved over the old. Handling is much tighter (avoid the convertible if that's a priority). They look beautiful, they sound beautiful, they fecking go! I've always wanted a Tuscan.
Having said all that, buy an Exige.
IMHO, next to the Exige a Tuscan appears more of a cruising car. You would enjoy the event of driving one. Whereas if the drive itself is where you get your pleasure then it's a no-brainer (before we even consider running costs).
Gruffy
*I have driven many examples of both

Having been out today in another Honda'd S2 (AlexA's from SELOC/Kent Lotus), I cannot understand why anyone in their right mind would spend 30-odd grand on an S2 Exige... they're just not "all-that", or at least not enough for me.
They look superb but I really think Lotus have got it wrong with this 'yota engine.
Boggy test drove one (S2 Ex) this week and was completely non-plussed by it too compared to his 111r... his words (IIRC) "I just don't get it".
For less money you can get a faster, better handling, more powerful, more WOW S2, running Nitrons, OZ's etc. and be all over and beyond any S2 Exige out there... AND take the roof off in the sun.

You need to take one on track to really get it.
On the road you wont get anywhere near the car's limits unless you are completely insane.
Interesting...criticism of the 'Yota S2 Exige always sounds distinctly chippy and smacks of sour grapes when one reads such threads.
At North Weald recently I was only 2/10ths of a second behind a 300bhp Honda'd/Nitrons/Ozzed-up S2 Elise on the circuit which does not include the run up road to the "classic" left hander they use to get you spinning at the start of the day. Yes, at Silverstone I am sure I'd be left choking on its exhaust fumes, but the S2 Exige is a very quick, well sorted car straight out of the box, and doesn't deserve some of the sniping it recieves IMHO.

s-works....sorry mate but you are well wrong!!.. i have owned all sorts of elise's for the last 5 years! The exige that i now own i would not swap for anything else.
Er, no I'm not. With all due respect, I know my own mind and my mind tells me (from being in a wide variety of Elise & Exige variants), that the Honda'd version is the one that makes the most sense.

You're totally right Davey, I can imagine one on track, but on road to me it just didn't add up, and still doesn't. If they offer the type of map as the one on the 240R then I think I'd get it more, the existing one I just don't.

Not at all, I just don't get why Lotus didn't make more of it.

Interesting point of note, but then you can't factor the ability of both drivers into that equation, also I know of at least one 300bhp S2 which has completely the wrong tyre choice and can't transmit the power down effectively.
I agree that the S2 Ex is all that you say it is... very quick, well sorted (compared to previous Lotus models) straight off the forecourt. However, you can get a car which is just as, if not more sorted, than one for less.
I'm not sniping, I'm merely stating that there are choices out there which should be explored and set into context if you're thinking of investing in a really great 70/30 track/road car.
