my 111s is no more
the turbodiesel is used by the wife to haul our many kids around.
now I'll soon need to have a car which I can use all the time.
can't afford to have 3 cars but can afford having a nice one.
111r I drove one it's great but
the 987 tempts me because of its supposed safety and reliability over the years.

Does it have to be a soft top?
TBH the 111R has a Toyota engine in it and they are pretty much bullet-proof. The Elise is also one of the safest cars to be in an impact in (unless you go head to head with something big).
??
in what way?
The engine bit or the impact bit? Or both?
Just to add something else... The first trip I took in my 111R was to London down the M11 - this was a big mistake, arrived home and wondered what the heck I'd done! The car wasn't run in so had to sit and endure 100 miles and I couldn't even hear the radio!? The next few trips were on B roads which is where everything became clear...
In short, the Elise is capable of clocking up the miles week by week but IMO it takes the edge off the car unless your mileage consists of B roads... Also 100's of miles in straight lines are not only dull as f***, they take £££'s out of the cars future value...

agree but I have to buy ONE car, I can afford a nice car, I won't be forced to M-ways only.
I used to do a short commute in my 111s. It made the otherways boring journey something happy every time, even if I could not exploit the car peformance.

should have said, the impact bit. Just would have thought a Volvo estate or Range Rover would have been far better cars to crash in!

The Elise has a very strong chassis which takes imact very well - it won't do it twice as the ally can't be repaired easily or cheaply but they are very strong little cars. Only problem comes is if you hit something big, particularly head on as the shape and height of the Elise can see you underneath the vehicle you've run into. >> Edited by cuzza on Tuesday 18th October 17:11
Go and try a 987. They`re both very fine cars but you can use a Boxster like you would use a diesel hack. I consider them to be like a grown up Elise - a bit more grunt, a lot more comfort, a little more money. If you get an S you can also lap quicker (according to EVO) than a lot of supposedly more hardcore toys!
If I may...
Both very special cars and offering differing levels of thrills. I don't think you'll be disappointed with either but if it's big mileage you're doing I'd think the 987 fits the bill that little bit better. A 2.7 Box. will return you around 27 to the gallon (30+ if light footed motorway mileage) as a bonus. Then again whats the Elise fuel consumption like?
A great problem to have!
Good luck.

I did. A couple of months ago I drove a 986 S and a 987 S back to back. And that's where all the trouble started.
The 986 did not impress me. Just the opposite for the 987.
which is very pricey as I did not want to spend considerably more than 30k.
Then I started thinking the the price difference against an 111R would probably stay also in the residuals.
And so now I'm undecided ...
400 miles a week ! Boxster S ! 2.7 is nearly as good but you get your ass wooped by decent hot hatches. 3.2 is a different story though if you can afford it. I do 1000 miles a month in my Series 1 and thats pretty hard. I imagine a 111R with hardtop, central locking, air con (a must)and a decent stereo upgrade would be far easier to live with.
At the end of the day, if its most on the motorway, boxster without a doubt, if other roads, elise no question !
Good luck
