MY '04 111S - how to remove rear speakers?
Discussion
Title gives this one away really. Want to look at replacing the rear speakers (i.e. the ones behind the seats) with some nice(r) ones I have.
Looked at the black plastic covery bit that's over the speaker itself to try and get that off, and I can't!? Is it just a pull off jobby? When I try it feels like I'm bringing the whole rear plastic bit with it! Is there a secret to it!?
Thanks all

Here is my step-by-step guide as used in my previous car (to excellent effect)
1. Purchase a chainsaw from www.gardenmachinerydirect.com
i found this little beaut did the trick:
2. Park car in a well ventilated area, preferably away from children and animals.
3. Remove soft/hard-top and seats of car.
4. Charge chainsaw thoroughly (we dont want it running out of juice mid-savagery)
5. Stand on seats facing plastic panels and raise said chainsaw above head in a manic pose. The wearing of a "scary" mask is optional.
If you do decide to wear one, i'd recommend this one:
6. Close your eyes and begin hacking at said plastic whilst laughing insanely.
7. Pull out whats left.

Do you turn them 1/8th of a turn of something to get the cover off and them access to the screws?
Just take a large flat-blade screwdriver and wedge it between the speaker grille outer edge and the plastic bulk housing and lever the grille off. It's worth taping the flat blade of the screwdriver with some insulation tape or similar to prevent scratching the bulkhead.
Should come off easily to reveal the four pozidrive screws holding the drive unit in. Piece 'o p#ss to get the driver's side unit out but you'll need a real short pozidrive or a ratchet driver to get at the pax side w/o removing the seat...
Not worth the bother really as the volume behind the drive units is bugger all and the factory fit spkrs sound OK if you play with the DAB54 settings a bit.
The only way to get bass you can hear on the move is to fit a sub but that adds extra weight

Ah thanks guys.
I did try turning the cover but they wouldn't move, so I tried levering them off but didn't feel like they were coming - so didn't do anymore before I asked the PH knowledge base!
To be honest the sound I get isn't that bad, but they just distort a bit at higher volumes (which to be honest I rarely use)....it's just that I've had some speakers for ages that my Bro bought me for my birthday, thought I might as well use them and they are quite good!
Thanks again all.

My rear spkrs distorted a bit so backed off the LEQ setting a tad.
The front speakers rattled & tizzed something chronic. Filled the enclosures with polyester wadding and made sure that the speaker chassis was wedged behind the plastic front trim before replacing the grilles and tightening the bolts One spkr was like this and the other was mounted on top of the trim. Best torque rating is break the bolt then back off half a turn!

Not sure if the 111S has the DAB54 head unit?
If you press and hold the AUD-DEQ button down there are three equaliser options that can be set-up. You can select to boost or cut portions of the audio spectrum according to bandwidth centre frequency, Q factor and level.
I used this option with the Roadster set-up and +2 on the rear/front balance to get a half decent sound.

Hi - I have an 03 111s - rear speakers covers are screwed in on 4 corners with a star headed screw. It is really tricky to undo the screws with the seats on - but it is possible. You do not need to remove the bulkhead cover etc.
5 1/2 inch speakers fit standard to replace the old ones, but high quality speakers tend to be deeper than the standard cardboard cones - you may need to remove some of the wadding behind the speakers. Once the 4 screws are undone, the cover and the speakers come out (fall out). The screws are screwed into those metal clips that clip onto the edge of the aluminium bulkhead. You will not be able to lever off the cover without doing damage .
Installing the rear speakers was at most a 15 min job. Because a screwdriver does not fit behind the seat, a bit of creativity was required in using the screwdriver tip from a cordless set and holding it at right angles with a pair of vice grips. The drivers side is easy with the seat pushed forward.
I am a numptie and it was easy. Unless they changed something on the 04 model. Be careful not to drop the screws down the inside of the bulkhead.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I'm a bit puzzled?! The outside of my speakers are completely flat - i.e. no screws to be seen. When I pull it does feel like they're not coming out which is why I thought there was more to it - but I can't SEE more to it.
Am I not looking in the right place?! Or are the screws slightly hidden?!

Tony - I had the same thing when I pulled my rear spkrs. No visible screws. As I am a 'practical' sort of engineer, I attacked the grilles with the flat blade screwdriver method I described earlier. Just applied gentle levering pressure whilst listening for any damaging noises
There's a bit of resistance at first then it just pops off revealing the spkr chassis with the four pozidrive screws.
As shangani said, the four pozidrives engage into those nasty metal clips. Quick tip - carefully pull them out and close them down tighter with a pair of pliers so when they are slid back on they actually stay in place! Otherwise you will find that they slip out of alignment with the screws when you're re-installing - or even worse slip off and fall down behind the bulkhead...
